Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"Here is an elegant and clear text for either study or the rehearsal room, notes where you need them, and the distinguished scholarship of the general editors, A. R. Braunmuller and Stephen Orgel, who understand that these are plays for performance as wellas great texts for contemplation." —Patrick Stewart
Library Journal

This work opens with short chapters about the theater, a biography, and a note on how the texts were compiled. There is a summary of each of the plays; the text is lucid and legible, with extensive footnotes.

I possess many volumes of "Complete Shakespeares", but if I was only able to keep one, this would be it. The binding, paper quality, type face, and readability are all the best. Hence a "five star" rating in all categories. If I were marooned on an island and could only have one book, without question it would be the Complete Pelican Shakespeare.

Overall, a lovely production. All of the Bard's work is presented in highly readable format and type, annotated effectively. The essays preceding each work, and those opening the book overall, are excellent - while long-time readers of Shakespeare might not agree with every interpretation, they will find even the most disputable ones provocative. It's a big book, not designed for toting on a plane ride, but it's much more than a "reference" book. At least read the essays before tackling the plays or poems. They alone are worth much more than the price of the book!

This is a massive tome, but it is a beautiful addition to any home library.
