Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This thick workbook provides 2000 ideas for activities suggested for use with children ages 18 to 36 months old. The activities are organized into nine interest areas such as physical me, nursery rhymes, favorite songs and favorite stories. Each activity area contains a physical, social-emotional, cognitive and language component. The author has emphasized using questioning with this age group and provides many samples with each activity area. While the emphasis on the wide range of developmental needs, and abilities within this age range are repeatedly stated, there are no suggestions in the introduction for novice teachers that explain the best avenue for using these activities. As the author admits, toddlers and two's are "on the go." A novice teacher may be tempted to try and corral youngsters into a group, even a small one, to carry out these activities. The best avenue for learning at these ages is exploring. This does not mean that interacting with 1 to 5 toddlers or twos for 5-10 minutes cannot occur, however, most activities in the book are primarily teacher-directed, not exploring or child-directed. At first glance, one would think they were really designed for 3 and 4 year-olds. While the book could be a resource for a teacher with an understanding of toddlers and two's needs, teachers with minimal training (a common occurrence) may take its "lessons" too literally for use with our youngest students. Numerous black line masters are included. 2003, Gryphon House, Ages adult parent professional.
