Overview

The Complete Sailor takes the reader from the first sail to a mastery of small-boat handling. Weaving his writing around 600 drawings by noted marine illustrator Kelly Mulford, David Seidman has created a book in which each double-page spread invites the eye and communicates volumes of information. The Complete Sailor goes beyond other learn-to-sail books to cover navigation, boat design, and seamanship. Encyclopedic in scope yet warm in style, it conveys the magic as well as the techniques of sailing. Among the other topics covered: anchoring, ropework, rigging, weather, fog, squalls, currents and tides, rules of the road, trailering, and working the winds. The book is a gentle introduction for those just starting out, and a guide to new horizons for those who already sail.

Previously published as On the Wind, this new edition takes the reader from the first sail to a mastery of small-boat handling, including navigation, design, seamanship, anchoring, ropework, rigging, weather, rules of the road, trailering and working the winds. 600 illustrations.

    Great read Set sail

This is my first time sailing a larger sailboat (26ft), as a long time ago I sailed a 14 ft boat. I needed this book and other books to get me aquainted with everything from learning about wind to experencing the thrill of being a captian. I loved this book. For First time boaters, this is the one to read

    more from this reviewer

Want to learn to sail? The Complete Sailor will help you to learn the terms used and experience some of what its like to be at sea without actually being there.

Wow!! I'm impressed with this book. I am getting ready to sail in a year or sooner and needed something to help with a little anxiety I was having about sailing. I don't have a boat yet and I had really no idea what to expect so I visited Barnes and Noble. What a wonderful surprise to find this book. There were other books with newer pix and more information but I didn't want to be too overwhelmed. The Complete Sailor has great drawings with a lot of detail. I had shown this to friends that are sailors and they were also impressed. Before putting out any great expense for sailing, buy this book! The Complete Sailor will help you reach for the adventure of sailing!!!
