Many of the genre's major names -- Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Carla Thomas, Booker T. & the MG's, William Bell, Rufus Thomas, the Bar-Kays, Albert King -- plus many terrific one-shot wonders are showcased in terrific sound and augmented with an in-depth booklet. For any serious soul or rock collector, it's an essential set, since Stax-Volt was not only a musically revolutionary label, its roster was deep with talent, which means much of the music on this collection is first-rate. But if you only want the hits, you'll be better off with a smaller collection, since too much of this set will sound too similar, and sorting through the nine discs will be a monumental task if you only want to hear Otis, Rufus, Carla, and Sam & Dave.

Soulsville U.S.A. is where it's at!

This monster box set tells the complete story of how Stax/Volt Records, the small outfit in Memphis grew into a rhythm & blues/soul powerhouse. Listen the story lies within the music. There are 244 tracks spanning across 9 jam-packed discs that include just about every A-side that Stax and subsidiary Volt released with some important B-sides during the period that this set covers known as the Atlantic-distributed era the golden years. Artists like Rufus Thomas, Carla Thomas, Booker T. & the MG's, Otis Redding and William Bell were among the most consistent at Stax/Volt so you know you've got a chock full of their songs sincde they've each got 10 or more here. Other artists here include Albert King, Mar-Keys, Bar-Kays, Johnnie Taylor, Ruby Johnson, and Mable John among so many others including some neat mystery records by some one-shot artists and groups. Included, there is a little booklet of liner notes, photos, and info about all the songs. If you weren't a fan of this kind of music before, or only knew just a few of Stax's best known, well...one listen to this collection will change all that. It's raw yet down-to-earth, gut-bucket, and energetic rhythm & blues at its best. A lot of great R&B subgenres are covered with everything from pumping and groovy instrumentals, to slow, sultry blues and to great make-you-want-to-get-up-and-dance numbers. Hits and non-hits it has everything, and every song is worth hearing especially since it seems like this music is getting scarcer and scarcer. Thanks to this set, however, which is still in print after 15 years (thank goodness), you can own the ultimate rhythm & blues experience in the ultimate box set in quanitity and quality.

    Deep Sho-Nuff Soul

Some of these tunes can only be fully appreciated if you lived "IN THE TIME". I'm not talking about your mother, father, older relations or dusties radio station memories. Alot of this stuff was done during the vietnam era,so many guys who did in-country time hold these tunes in a special memory bank. But this is the ONLY set where you can hear the ORIGINAL 1965 version of THE WORLD IS ROUND by Rufus Thomas.
