The authors, both acknowledged authorities, examine the topography of the Valley, the choice of specific tomb sites, the makeup of the workforce, and how the royal monuments were prepared for the king's afterlife. They tell the story of the chroniclers and archaeologists throughout history, and catalogue all the Valley's burials, describing for each its discovery, architecture, decoration, and contents. And, in three final sections, they discuss the robbing of the Valley in antiquity, the hiding of the royal mummies, and the urgent steps now needed to safeguard the royal necropolis for future generations. 532 illustrations, 76 in color.

This is the most up-to-date single volume on the Valley of the Kings, where the New Kingdom pharaohs of ancient Egypt were buried. The most well-known burial there is that of Tutankhamun, but there are many less well-known royal tombs (almost all pillaged in antiquity) that are extremely interesting, nonetheless. Every tomb in the Valley of the Kings is considered, accompanied by a plan and photos. Each tomb's contents are itemized and discussed; a useful "Factfile" is provided for each tomb, which lists the excavator(s), tomb number, and most important bibliography. After an introduction, chronology, and map of the Valley of the Kings, the book is organized into four chapters entitled "Preparations for the Afterlife," "Agents of Discovery," "Tombs of the Kings," and "Decline of a Royal Necropolis." The recently much hyped KV5, an enormity of rooms (65 to date) filled with incredible amounts of rubble (which Howard Carter probably rightly gave up clearing) is claimed as a tomb for the 50 or more sons of Ramesses II. Of course Tutankhamun's tomb is treated in some detail. There is even a section on the animal tombs, including one with a mummified monkey and dog. The authors, who are experts, have provided the general reader with a well-informed discussion of every aspect of the Valley of the Kings. Reviewer: Claire Rosser

    Comprehensive Valley of the Kings Book

    Completing this book took quite a while due to the detail provided on each and every page. I wish I had had this book before I visited Egypt and the Valley of the Kings. I can now revisit, in detail, this compelling part of Egypt that I could not due to the lack of time during my first visit. Excellent photographs, historical references, illustrations, etc. I recommend this book to anyone contemplating a visit.

    The king's are found once again for the first time in many years

    this book gives everything you need to know about the valley of the kings. if you want to learn more about the valley of the kings then you must read this book.
