OVERVIEW OF SELECT WORKS

- THE MYSTERIOUS AFFAIR AT STYLES

The Mysterious Affair at Styles is Christie's first published novel, and introduces Hercule Poirot, Inspector (later, Chief Inspector) Japp and Lieutenant Hastings (later, Captain). The story is told in first person by Hastings, and features many of the elements that, thanks to Christie, have become icons of the Golden Age of Detective Fiction.

The Times Literary Supplement gave the book an extremely enthusiastic review, which stated that "The only fault this story has is that it is almost too ingenious ... it is said to be the author's first book, and the result of a bet about the possibility of writing a detective story in which the reader would not be able to spot the criminal. Every reader must admit that the bet was won".

The New York Times Book Review said:

"Though this may be the first published book of Miss Agatha Christie, she betrays the cunning of an old hand … You must wait for the last-but-one chapter in the book for the last link in the chain of evidence that enabled Mr. Poirot to unravel the whole complicated plot and lay the guilt where it really belonged. And you may safely make a wager with yourself that until you have heard M. Poirot's final word on the mysterious affair at Styles, you will be kept guessing at its solution and will most certainly never lay down this most entertaining book." Poirot was described as a "delightful little old man".

- THE SECRET ADVERSARY

The Secret Adversary is a work of detective fiction by Agatha Christie and first published in the United Kingdom in January 1922 and in the United States later in that same year. The novel introduces the characters of Tommy and Tuppence who feature in three other Christie books and one collection of short stories written throughout her writing career.

Upon publication of the first book edition, it was reviewed by The Times Literary Supplement which described it as "a whirl of thrilling adventures". It stated that the characters of Tommy and Tuppence as "refreshingly original" and praised the fact that the "identity of the arch-criminal, the elusive "Mr Brown", is cleverly concealed to the very end".

The New York Times Book Review was also impressed, stating, "It is safe to assert that unless the reader peers into the last chapter or so of the tale, he will not know who this secret adversary is until the author chooses to reveal him."

Some additional reviews of the novel include:

"It's an excellent yarn, impossible to put it aside until the mystery has been fathomed." — Daily Chronicle

"An exciting story of adventure, full of hairbreadth escapes and many disappointments if they try to guess the riddle before the author is ready to give them the clue. An excellent story." — Saturday Review

And you may safely make a wager with yourself that until you have heard M. Poirot's final word on the mysterious affair at Styles, you will be kept guessing at its solution
The Daily Chronicle
An excellent yarn and the reader will find it as impossible as we did to put it aside until the mystery has been fathomed.
The Irish Independent
A book of thrilling adventure. Sensational adventures not only entertaining, but ingenious and amazingly clever.
The Saturday Review
An exciting story of adventure, full of hairbreadth escapes and many disappointments if they try to guess the riddle before the author is ready to give them the clue. An excellent story.
The Times Literary Supplement
The only fault this story has is that it is almost too ingenious. It is said to be the author's first book, and the result of a bet about the possibility of writing a detective story in which the reader would not be able to spot the criminal. Every reader must admit that the bet was won.

Meet the Author

Agatha Christie, DBE, (15 September 1890 – 12 January 1976), was a British crime writer of novels, short stories, and plays. She also wrote romances under the name Mary Westmacott, but she is best remembered for her 80 detective novels—especially those featuring Hercule Poirot and Miss Jane Marple—and her successful West End theatre plays.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Christie is the best-selling writer of books of all time and, with William Shakespeare, the best-selling author of any kind. Only the Bible has sold more than her roughly four billion copies of novels.

According to Index Translationum, Christie is the most translated individual author, with only the collective corporate works of Walt Disney Productions surpassing her.

Her books have been translated into at least 103 languages. Christie's stage play The Mousetrap holds the record for the longest initial run: it opened at the Ambassadors Theatre in London on 25 November 1952 and as of 2011 is still running after more than 23,000 performances. In 1955, Christie was the first recipient of the Mystery Writers of America's highest honour, the Grand Master Award, and in the same year Witness for the Prosecution was given an Edgar Award by the MWA for Best Play. Most of her books and short stories have been filmed, some many times over (Murder on the Orient Express, Death on the Nile and 4.50 From Paddington for instance), and many have been adapted for television, radio, video games and comics.

Almost all of Agatha Christie’s books are whodunits, focusing on the British middle and upper classes. Usually, the detective either stumbles across the murder or is called upon by an old acquaintance, who is somehow involved. Gradually, the detective interrogates each suspect, examines the scene of the crime and makes a note of each clue, so readers can analyze it and be allowed a fair chance of solving the mystery themselves. In a few of her novels there are multiple victims. Finally, the detective organises a meeting of all the suspects and slowly denounces the guilty party, exposing several unrelated secrets along the way, sometimes over the course of thirty or so pages. The murders are often extremely ingenious, involving some convoluted piece of deception. Christie’s stories are also known for their taut atmosphere and strong psychological suspense, developed from the deliberately slow pace of her prose.

    Not to be missed!

This is her early work and it shows. Few authors can match early Agatha Christie so don't let that hold you back. This volume contains her first 3 novels (The Mysterious Affair at Styles, The Secret Adversary and The Murder on the Links) along with 22 of her short stories.

A great introduction to the master of mystery

Along with Sherlock Holmes and Father Brown, Hercule Poirot makes up the trio of amazing detective characters created by British mystery writers. Just excellent.

Enough to keep any mystery fan busy for a weeks!

My parents loved Agatha Christie so much that they named me after her, and I can attest that this is a great collection which provides enough enjoyably entertaining Agatha Christie stories to keep any mystery fan busy for weeks. Excellent.

    JUST EXCELLENT!

This is a truly excellent book that contains Agatha Christie's early works. They include the novel where Hercule Poirot gets introducted for the very first time. All the books in this collection are top rate, and I would venture that there is no modern writer who can compete.

    5 stars!!!

Actually Has Agatha Christie Novels AND Short Stories

    Give me a break

I wonder who is really writing all these glowing reviews. Since when does 'complete works' mean two books? Just call it what it is a quit trying to trick people. What other reason is there for calling it 'complete works' except to deceive and make a quick buck.

    very good value for money

I am an Agatha Christie fan and would recommend her books to anyne who enjoys a murder mystery in which the emphasis is on the characterisation and plot rather than on action or violence. Naturally, her books are set mainly in the UK in the 1920s, 30s 40s with a few being set in more recent times.
    Her books are easy reading.

Highly Recommended to any mystery fan

This collection of Agatha Christie novels and short stories is a great tool for any of her fans. I own all her books in paperback but this makes it easier to read and most of the stories are with Hercule Poirot so that to me is worth five stars.

    Very good read!

Though the page numbers may have to be increased over time, this is only volume one- and it is far from dissapointing. Agatha Christie fans, look forward to the next installment, and serious mystery loving readers won't be bored by these stories. At $3, this is a great deal.
