Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

"Gryphon House helps early childhood educators cover all the bases with a comprehensive series of curriculum guides. Titles in the Innovations series include Infant and Toddler Development, The Comprehensive Infant Curriculum, The Comprehensive Toddler Curriculum, The Comprehensive Infant Curriculum: A Self-Directed Teacher's Guide, The Comprehensive Toddler Curriculum: A Self Directed Teacher's Guide, and The Comprehensive Infant and Toddler Curriculum, Trainer's Guide. The texts are designed to be used as a pre-service model, an in-service model or an annual all-day training plan. Focusing on the development of children from birth to age three, the first book offers teacher an in-depth guide to the underlying ages and stages, theories, and best practices of the early childhood field. The self-directed manuals offer 40-plus hours of instruction on such topics as: developmental tasks; using forms to document events, progress and interactions; using anecdotal observations; creating supportive learning environments; supporting emerging literacy; and developing activities and experiences that address the needs of infants and toddlers." - Curriculum Review Magazine
Children's Literature
This self-directed guide for improving skills in infant care and education is a companion to the authors' book about Infant/Toddler Curriculum. Through 38 modules, a teacher masters each step alone or with the guidance of another teacher or supervisor. From the introduction of the "Innovations" approach to planning to parents to recording behaviors, each module states the time necessary for completion, checklists, forms to use and readings to do before moving on to the next module. The guide is thorough, well organized and well written, but practitioners with limited reading skills may need some assistance in understanding child development language. The workbook contains all the necessary forms for observing and recording children's behaviors and would be an excellent asset in training new staff so that all have an understanding of a program's philosophy and practices. The whole program is estimated to take 41 hours and a certificate is included for those that complete the process. 2001, Gryphon House, $12.95. Ages Adult. Reviewer: Meredith Kiger AGES: Adult
