Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

"Gryphon House helps early childhood educators cover all the bases with a comprehensive series of curriculum guides. Titles in the Innovations series include Infant and Toddler Development, The Comprehensive Infant Curriculum, The Comprehensive Toddler Curriculum, The Comprehensive Infant Curriculum: A Self-Directed Teacher's Guide, The Comprehensive Toddler Curriculum: A Self Directed Teacher's Guide, and The Comprehensive Infant and Toddler Curriculum, Trainer's Guide. The texts are designed to be used as a pre-service model, an in-service model or an annual all-day training plan. Focusing on the development of children from birth to age three, the first book offers teacher an in-depth guide to the underlying ages and stages, theories, and best practices of the early childhood field. The self-directed manuals offer 40-plus hours of instruction on such topics as: developmental tasks; using forms to document events, progress and interactions; using anecdotal observations; creating supportive learning environments; supporting emerging literacy; and developing activities and experiences that address the needs of infants and toddlers." - Curriculum Review Magazine
Children's Literature
Designed to be used with "The Infant & Toddler Development" series, the trainer's guide is a comprehensive handbook about providing inservice or preservice workshops using the "Innovations" approach designed by the same authors. It includes a step-by-step approach to planning and implementing staff training, from activities for getting the group warmed up to handouts, overheads and actual presentation. There's a grid for integrating all facets of training in a sequenced approach and a schedule for pacing. The book suggests a one-day inservice, but there is a great deal of information and new ideas to be processed by attendees. A child care center could plan to accomplish it over several weeks and allow participants to read and study materials sufficiently; then, perhaps, the center could attempt several new ideas and later, reflect on the process. However a staff decides to accomplish the training, everything one needs to train staff in infant and toddler care is included in this program, except maybe the refreshments. 2001, Gryphon House, $29.95.
