A deep national crisis faced the United States in the year 1850. It threatened to split the nation in two. It arose over the issue of slavery in the new territories of California and New Mexico. The president of the United States, General Zachary Taylor, had no clear policy on the issue. Taylor tried to be neutral, hoping that the problem would solve itself. But it did not solve itself. The split between the north and south got wider. There was a real danger that the south would try to leave the Union. Then, Senator Henry Clay of Kentucky stepped forward to save the Union.
