Overview

9th century Wales...

Evan, king of Powys, returns from a wedding to find a village ransacked, with women and children dead. Neighboring Gwynedd has broken the peace, crossing the mountain to pillage and murder. The dead babes tear his heart, and Evan vows to break the heart of Gwynedd.

Gwynedd's most guarded treasure is a pampered princess. In a bloody raid, Evan's comrades return to Powys with Gwynedd's heart.

Evan knows holding the princess will be dangerous and her safe-keeping may mean the difference between the lasting peace he desires and a bloody war. He's prepared for her to be kept safe but unprepared for the girl's intelligence, compassion and damnably kissable mouth.

"Evan took in the vision of a scarlet gown, which barely disguised the shapely form and a river of black curls that caressed to girl's waist. Oh, Lord. He wished he had ordered sackcloth."

Morleyna's secret gift of Sight reveals a cruel betrayal that sends Evan on a mystical journey where he discovers his only chance for redemption rests in the hands of his captive.

Her brothers will arrive to claim their sapphire-eyed sister. Will her kinsmen, bent on revenge, destroy Evan and his comrades? Or will destruction come from Morleyna who may be the reincarnation of someone whose beauty captivated a nation?

Editorial Reviews

Diana Gabaldon
"Three more engaging Welshmen have never been written! By turns hilarious, poignant, bloody--and bloody accurate--historical fiction seldom gets as good as this."
Belva Lane
THE COMRADES, by Lynne Sears Williams is a book that I could read over and over again. It reminds me of the books I have read in years past by Morgan Llywelyn. British Isles historical novels have always been one of my favorite genres. Ms Williams research resulting in the authentic feel for the story she tells makes THE COMRADES a real treat to read. Her ability to paint such vivid word pictures keeps the reader engaged and wanting more when you have finished THE COMRADES.

Meet the Author

Lynne Sears Williams was born in Canada, afflicted with a law degree. There were only ten houses on her street, four kids went to law school; clearly the water was contaminated.

In the 2nd year of law school, Lynne saw the school ‘playboy’ carrying a huge fantasy novel. Certain that her wedding ring flashed protective bolts of lightning, she asked how he found time for ‘free reading.’ “If I didn’t read something that wasn’t law, I’d lose my mind.” Incredible! The kid had a point that didn’t include hitting on Lynne.

Armed with knowledge, Lynne went home, picked up the first book at hand, read, then fell asleep. She was transported into a dream, where there was a great looking guy, a beautiful woman, with cold wind blowing from an ocean.

As the days went by, each time she closed her eyes it was like watching a movie as the characters became real. Evan, who was a king, had two cousins. The woman’s name was Morleyna and Lynne knew a grudge separated the two kingdoms.

Lynne gave up trying to understand the Tort Contract Matrix during an honors lecture. On a page where she was supposed to write Brilliant Notes, Lynne decided to draw a map of the country she’d been seeing. A mountain range here, a different kingdom there and when she got home Lynne opened an encyclopedia; she had drawn a map of Wales. A laptop appeared and a story was born.

Lynne worked as a freelance journalist for the Canadian and American Medical Associations Journals. Law professor Chris Levy and Lynne co-authored a legal article published by The Alberta Law Review. Lynne credits Professor Levy for his eagle eyes on detail. She finished her law degree at the University of Madison, Wisconsin and interned at District 4’s Madison Court of Appeal for her final semester.

"The Comrades" is a stirring romance, graced with memo

"The Comrades" is a stirring romance, graced with memorable characters, historically accurate place settings and customs, a first-rate writing style, and a rousing good plot. Williams' effectively carries readers back into Medieval Wales when the post-Roman Kingdoms of Powys and Gwynedd were at odds with each other while contending with ongoing threats from the English and the Norse.

    Enjoyable historical romance

This book was highly recommended by my favorite author (Diana Gabaldon), so I read it with great expectations. The story is set in 9th century Wales and follows the exploits of three cousins, one of whom (Evan) is the king of the realm of Powys. After an attack by a neighboring kingdom, Evan kidnaps Morleyna, the princess of the neighboring realm, in revenge. The princess is beautiful, intelligent and kind-hearted. Evan unexpectedly finds a friend and confidant in her. Ms. Sears' writing brings 9th century Wales to life. The men are larger-than-life, handsome and intelligent. The princess is smart and sassy and has the gift of Sight. While it did not live up to my expectations, I enjoyed the plot and would recommend it to anyone who likes historical romance.
