All Music Guide - Marisa Brown
Although identical twin sisters Tegan and Sara Quin first appeared in the music scene in the late '90s playing the kind of folk-rock and folk-punk more associated with other Lilith Fair in which they participated artists of the time, by the time 2007 rolled around they had moved into much poppier territory. It was a progression, to be sure, from This Business of Art to their fourth Vapor full-length -- one that can be heard in the time spent on production, the louder guitars -- but that still may not prepare listeners for The Con. Produced by Death Cab for Cutie's Chris Walla, the album is full of quirky, Aqueduct-like keyboards, punchy bass from Weezer's Matt Sharp and ...

Produced by Death Cab for Cutie's Chris Walla, the album is full of quirky, Aqueduct-like keyboards, punchy bass from Weezer's Matt Sharp and AFI's Hunter Burgan, and even some guitar help from Kaki King that stretch and shove their way into the spaces between Tegan and Sara's hook-driven melodies and clean harmonies, more complex than anything they've done before. Though each sister writes and sings lead on seven tracks, it is Sara especially who writes the more intricate pieces "Relief Next to Me," "Like O, Like H", showing a more adult songwriter, one who has matured since her first work came out, while Tegan draws more from simpler emo and pop-punk arrangements "Nineteen," "Hop a Plane", her songs more straightforward, both compositionally and lyrically, than her sister's. But this isn't to say that there's a kind of disparity or harsh contrast on The Con. Much like the duo's voices, which share a timbre, a clear relationship, even if their actual tonality differs, the songs on the album complement each other, play off the other's strengths, and make the record very much an entity instead of simply a collection of tracks, setting it off as an impressive step forward in their already commendable discography.
Entertainment Weekly - Neil Drumming
[Grey's Anatomy</> faves] Tegan and Sara are back with The Con, a collection of angsty, catchy pop that's also ideal for scoring the antics of young doctors in heat. [B+]

    Con

Tegan and Sara have done it again... this album is the best release from 2007. It is a tight set of songs, no filler. Open your mind and give these girls a listen.

    Terrible arrangements and lyrics

The melodies are bad. A lot of times I felt as though I was listening to little kids play music. The singing is actually laughable. I thought some of the songs were made as some kind of a joke. It doesn't take any musical knowledge to see that these two girls just don't have it.

T & S have really matured with this new album. The Con (more than past records) shows the differences between the two girls both as writers and musicians. I have been a bit of a T & S fan for several years...but this album totally blew me away. Chris Walla and the Quins did the right thing by sticking close to the demos. They're amazing and all of the mixing and overlapping is genius on this album. Regardless of the other reviews...BUY THIS RECORD! If you have any musical knowledge whatsoever you'll appreciate the risks this album takes.

    Music heard in a garage

This is no better than music I hear my neighbors play in their garage from time to time. I didn't like this at all. Play the music samples to see if you like it.

    Childish lyrics

I thought the lyrics were childish. The guitar playing was all right though.

    Con

I was eagerly anticipating the release of The Con...and this album was worth the wait. I love it more with each listen. Tegan and Sara are in a league all of their own. Nothing played on the radio today can touch these girls' talent.... Do yourself a favor and buy this cd!
