Overview

Conga player Poncho Sanchez, a veteran of Cal Tjader's band, has made an album a year for Concord Records since 1982; he's the current keeper of the Latin jazz small group flame. His fluid and enticing West Coast ensemble -- modeled on the combos led for decades by one of his idols, Mongo Santamaria -- rarely features dazzling soloists, but the rhythmic juices are always flowing. Sanchez is a super conguero who keeps his band firmly in the pocket. This generous and well-chosen sampler showcases Sanchez and company at their best on originals, standards, and such Latin-jazz staples as "A Night in Tunisia" and "Watermelon Man." There are guest spots from Mongo Santamaria, Tito Puente, Freddie Hubbard, and Eddie Harris (on a dynamic version of his "Cold Duck Time"). Unlike his elders (Puente, Palmieri, Barretto) Sanchez doesn't split his time between Latin-jazz ensembles and salsa orchestras -- all his attention is on the former, and it shows.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Scott Yanow
With one or two exceptions, conga player Poncho Sanchez's entire recording career as a leader has been documented by Concord. In 1998, Concord celebrated its 25th anniversary with a Jazz Heritage series of samplers. The Sanchez CD has a selection apiece from 11 of his releases, including guest appearances by Mongo Santamaria (on "Watermelon Man"), Freddie Hubbard, Eddie Harris ("Cold Duck Time"), Tito Puente, and the former Jazz Crusaders front line (Wilton Felder and Wayne Henderson). Among the other highlights are "Papa Gato," "A Night in Tunisia," "Jumpin' with Symphony Sid," and Cal Tjader's "I Showed Them." A worthwhile introduction to the exuberant and accessible music of Poncho Sanchez.
