Overview

In the early years of our country, American leaders began to realize that there was a need for stronger central government. This led to the Constitutional Convention of 1787, during which a brilliant group of men hammered out the United States Constitution. It allows for three branches of government that limit each other's power through a system of checks and balances. After much argument, discussion, and compromise, the Constitution was finally ratified. That document, which is at the basis of the federal government, remains largely unchanged today.
