The Contino Sessions

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Jon Dolan
On their 1997 debut, DEAD ELVIS, Death in Vegas made rock-friendly dance music that got them lumped in with big beat stars of the hour like Progidy and Crystal Method. But Richard Fearless and Steve Hellier harbor different dreams than hitting crossover gold with the American rock-rave scene, and their new CONTINO SESSIONS has less to do with the deep house Fearless spins at his prestigious Heavenly Social DJ sets than the droning space-rock of Spiritualized or the mystic, minimalist pulse of Neu!. The album opening "Dirge" layers beautiful noise on top of a incessant 4/4 beat, as ambient chanteuse Dot Allison lets her angelic vocals glide above the music's sleek, black ...

Along the same lines, the watery guitarscapes of "Flying" and lazy, hazy "Neptune City" are Krautrock-influenced indie-drones that might make My Bloody Valentine's Kevin Shields smile. Even a phoned-in cameo from Iggy Pop, who plays a zomboid clubland stalker on "Aisha," can't screw up an album that ingeniously trades in techno trance for zoned out space-rock bliss.

    DiV, I like it.

I havent really thought about why I like it so much as, yes, I really like it. I had downloaded "Death in Vegas - Rocco" "(Dead Elvis" album) from Napster as part of some soundtrack (back in the old days) and I liked it, then I heard Aisha on the radio. I bought Dead Elvis, and yes, it is good. Right now I'm waiting to recieve this album and "Scorpio Rising" as I have just bought them. Yes, they are good. As for Aisha, it really confused me, the whole "..your hands around my throat, ask me to let go" part, until I saw the music video that can be downloaded from their site (as well as a bunch of full length songs in varying streaming quality) seach google for "Death in Vegas", use the quotes, and you'll find the site. Your tastes may vary, so listen first-thats my advice to you.
