All Music Guide - Scott Yanow
The second of four CDs put out by The Old Masters label that includes every one of the master takes recorded by the popular Coon-Sanders Nighthawks has 23 selections that trace the band's evolution during an important two-year period. It is a measure of the group's stability and success that there were no personnel changes during the period, and that the band continued to evolve without changing its basic approach or sound. Both drummer Carleton Coon and pianist Joe Sanders an inventive arranger were fine singers, among the best in jazz during this time. Although the group featured no major soloists the emphasis tended to be on ensembles, the level of musicianship was quite high. Among the highlights of this highly enjoyable set are "Deep Henderson," "My Baby Knows How," "Brainstorm," "I Ain't Got Nobody," "Louder and Funnier," "Ready for the River," and "Blazin'," but every selection is well worth hearing by fans of the era. This is the strongest of the four TOM CDs, although all four are recommended to 1920s collectors.
