An exciting and charming book for kids.

I was attracted to this book because I love dogs and was looking for a gift for my young niece. I was not disappointed. This book reminds me of the old Nancy Drew mysteries in that it is exciting and draws the reader into the story very quickly. It is well written and told from the viewpoint of the main character, a girl named Ree. She has a special relationship with her psychic Saluki hound who is a mischief magnet. While they are at a dog show Merlin, the hound, leads Ree and her friends into a mystery at an old museum with a cranky curator who dislikes kids and dogs. As Ree and her friends work to solve the mystery to save Merlin, the reader learns about the intricacies of dog showing and the meaning of true friendship. A glossary of dog show terms is at the end of the book which is a real help in navigating this specialized field. Even though I am an adult, I really enjoyed this book and I think young readers will too.
