Overview

Episcopal priests who convert to Catholicism can become ordained Catholic priests even if married with children. Such is the case with Francis X. (Frank) Donnelly a physics professor and weekend assistant at a Philadelphia parish who is left to raise his baby daughter after his wife dies in a car accident. Three years later he falls in love with a teacher in the parish school, Victoria Meyers, herself a widow with a small child. He hopes to marry her but first needs the permission from the Vatican. The Vatican isn’t happy with his request, and they aren’t alone. Frank has begun receiving emails that threaten him and those he loves and that carry the message “PRIESTS SHOULD BE TRUE PRIESTS.” A nearly identical email is found on the laptop of a priest who was murdered and Frank assists a woman police detective investigating the death. In his physics laboratory Frank is baffled by the strange behavior of a routine cosmic ray experiment; behavior which suggests divine intervention and which threatens the Catholic Church's claim to infallibility. There are three mysteries at work; one a matter of murder, one a matter of physics, and one the uncertain outcome of Frank and Vicki's relationship. A major element of the plot is the juggling of these disparate pieces and tying them all together while the couple struggles with raising their children and skirting the question asked by the parishioners of St. Elizabeth's as to how it is that their young curate is dating the sixth grade teacher. unprecedented concession from Rome.
