Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Angela, whose showboaty older sister, Bernadette, gets the best Halloween treats, begs to wear her sibling's hand-me-down costumes. But Bernadette still outdoes her, three years in a row, until Angela designs a special ghost outfit, and Bernadette stays home with chicken pox. The title of Macdonald's (Hedgehog Bakes a Cake) paper-over-board book is a slight misnomer, for Angela wears secondhand items only twice and lends flair to each-adults just don't notice her. Wilsdorf (Sunny Boy!), whose sympathetic illustrations recall Susan Meddaugh's, evokes understanding of Angela's yearly dilemma and shows the underdog developing an assertive personality. Ages 4-up. Children's Literature - Amie Rose Rotruck
Every Halloween Angela's older sister Bernadette somehow manages to have a better time than Angela. The year Angela was a fairy princess, Bernadette was a rabbit. Angela needed to wear a coat over her costume so only Bernadette's costume was noticed. The next year Angela wore Bernadette's old rabbit costume. It rained, so Angela had to wear a raincoat, while Bernadette did not as her witch costume was plastic. This year Angela is tired of copying Bernadette's previous year's costume, so she decides to do something different. Angela ends up having a Halloween completely unlike any before. This tale of sibling rivalry at Halloween is something to which most children can relate. Wilsdorf's illustrations capture all the fun and frustration that Halloween can bring.
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2-On Halloween, Angela is always upstaged by her older sister. When she is four, she is forced to cover her pretty fairy ensemble with a jacket, and her sister's rabbit outfit gets all of the attention. The next year, she dons the bunny suit, but a rainstorm transforms her into a soggy rat, while Bernadette's plastic witch hat and cape remain pristine. The next Halloween, Angela wears the hat and cape, adding makeup for a "really ugly" effect, but Bernadette steals the show with a beautiful gypsy dress. By age seven, Angela is fed up with being a copycat and makes herself a stylish ghost costume. Chicken pox keeps Bernadette from trick-or-treating and, with no older sister to overshadow her and a great getup, Angela is finally the star. She enjoys the glory, but also saves a special treat for her sister. The detailed watercolor-and-ink illustrations include wonderful facial expressions and scenes that capture the joy of Halloween. Warm hues and homey backdrops keep the tone light. Filled with gentle humor, this is a fun, non-preachy story about the challenges of being a younger sibling. Use it as a holiday selection or when exploring family relationships.-JoAnn Jonas, Chula Vista Public Library, San Diego, CA Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Angela struggles in the shadow of her more admired older sister. At four, she wants to be a fairy for Halloween and mama obliges with a beautiful costume that includes wings. Cold weather necessitates coats for trick-or-treating, however, and Angela's costume is partially covered. Older Bernadette wears the coat under her bunny costume and earns raves for her adorableness, while Angela is virtually ignored. The same pattern repeats itself in subsequent years, even when willful Angela tries the same costumes (with minor adjustments) that Bernadette has worn in previous years. Only when Angela comes up with her own costume, which she builds from the ground up, does she lose her resentment and gain a sense of pride. Bernadette comes down with chicken pox, so Angela trick or treats with her friend Albert, remembering to bring back a candy apple for her sister. Wilsdorf's quirky watercolor-and-ink illustrations add a level of age-appropriate impishness to the tale. A wise and winning story about sisterly rivalry and affection. (Picture book. 4-8)
