Overview

The Count of Monte Cristo (French: Le Comte de Monte-Cristo) is an adventure novel by Alexandre Dumas, père. It is often considered to be, along with The Three Musketeers, Dumas' most popular work. He completed the work in 1844. Like many of his novels, it is expanded from the plot outlines suggested by his collaborating ghostwriter Auguste Maquet.[1]

The story takes place in France, Italy, islands in the Mediterranean and the Levant during the historical events of 1815–1838 (from just before the Hundred Days through to the reign of Louis-Philippe of France). The historical setting is a fundamental element of the book. It is an adventure story primarily concerned with themes of hope, justice, vengeance, mercy and forgiveness.

The book is considered a literary classic today. According to Luc Sante, "The Count of Monte Cristo has become a fixture of Western civilization's literature, as inescapable and immediately identifiable as Mickey Mouse, Noah's flood, and the story of Little Red Riding Hood."[2]

An adventure that stands the test of time! A read/audio book for any age

My biggest reading regret is that I did not pick this book up sooner. Alexandre takes us to a time in France that was in turmoil. He quickly introduces us to Edmond Dantes and his lovely Mercedes. The plot quickly follows and grabs the readers imagination & attention. I found it hard to set my Nook down.
I can honestly say that I have never read a book twice, but this will be the first (and you always remember your first! ;) ) I will read this book to my children one day. My next step is to listen to it on audio book so I can get the character names and location pronunciations correct.
I want to say that this book is for everyone. Some might not be able to actually read the book due to the style/century it was written, but I believe audio book is the answer. Pick it up and get started.

    Should have read this sooner

I regret having not read this sooner. It is a "can't put down" type of book. My only complaint about this version is, it did not have the detailed table of contents it described in the product overview.

This has to be value for money.  maybe I'm a bit picky,  but to change 1815 to 1810 on the very first line,
and 'glass' for 'mirror' chapter 7's opening paragraph!!!   Could have been a 5 Star!!!

    Wonderful adventure!

Edmond Dantes has everything that he needs a loving father, a beautiful girlfriend and a new job as captain of his ship. During his engagement party, all is ripped away from him and he is thrown into prison not knowing why he is there. After fourteen years in prison he finally escapes to exact his long and tortuous revenge on his enemies. Great read and lovely ending.
