Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
The intention of these four annual volumes in BRB's ``Public Record Research Library'' is to provide comprehensive access to the sources of public record. The Sourcebook of Federal Courts , the definitive guide to searching for case information at the local level within the federal court system, is unique in the type of information given, providing, for example, indexing and case record information (how cases are filed, where filed, where stored, etc.) and specific search information (who to contact, fees for service, types of service offered, etc.). Although directory information for federal courts is documented in other sources ( Want's Federal-State Court Directory, 1993, Want Pub . Co., 1992), these lack the research detail of BRB's title. The Sourcebook of County Court Rec ords is a concise and straightforward reference manual to the main and secondary repositories of American county court house records. The introduction contains hints on how to request public records and notes peculiarities of searching public record repositories. At the beginning of each state section is a brief description of court structure and access. Also included is the procedure for obtaining vital statistics (birth, death, marriage, divorce), real estate, and criminal records. Summaries of each county are given with district court and courthouse record policies, procedures, addresses, and phone numbers. While other directories (Elizabeth Petty Bentley's County Courthouse Book , LJ 9/1/90; BNA's Directory of State and Federal Courts, Judges, and Clerks, BNA, Inc., 1992. 4th ed.; County Executive Director, Carroll, 1990) lead you to county record information, none offers the practical, detailed information found here. Look into The Sourcebook of Local Court and County Record Retrievers to find individuals who will locate and retrieve public court and county information. In Section 1, the type of public information retrieved is noted: court records (U.S. district, bankruptcy, civil, criminal, and probate) and county records (Uniform Commercial Code filings, deeds, taxes, and vital records). In Section 2, profiles of the retrievers are given (directory information, turnaround time, specializations, and payment procedure). Locus: The Ultimate Locator is not, as it claims, ``the only directory that goes beyond a listing of zip codes and cities.'' The only zip code directory worth using is one that lists states, cities, street names, and numbers. Locus does not give street addresses. The National Five-Digit Zip Code and Post Office Directory , published by the U.S. Postal Service, is the best reference source for locating zip codes. The Sourcebook of Federal Courts and The Sourcebook of County Records are recommended for general, academic, and legal reference collections. Because of its specialized topic, The Sourcebook of Local Court and County Record Retrievers is not a necessary acquisition for general reference collections, and Locus is not recommended.-- Lissa Holzhausen, Washburn Sch. of Law Lib., Topeka, Kan.
