All Music Guide - Patsy Morita
Louis XIV of France was a great patron of the arts, establishing a number of institutions in his court that would encourage and produce magnificent works of architecture, visual art, music, and other creations in an effort to equal the glory of Italian culture of the preceding centuries. All Music Guide - Patsy Morita
Louis XIV of France was a great patron of the arts, establishing a number of institutions in his court that would encourage and produce magnificent works of architecture, visual art, music, and other creations in an effort to equal the glory of Italian culture of the preceding centuries. Erato, the French early music label, has culled from its catalog 220 tracks of music representing the era of Louis XIV for this 2011 collection: The Court of the Sun King. The recordings range from some of Erato's very first issues from 1953 -- Charpentier's "Te Deum" with Marie-Claire Alain on the organ -- to those made as late as 1998: François Couperin's "Messe pour les Couvents de religieux et religieuses," also featuring Alain. The sound will vary depending on the recording date, but the performances are commendable. Many of these are the recordings that made Jean-François Paillard and his Chamber Orchestra, trumpeter Maurice André, and Alain world-famous. As is expected with this era, there is a great deal of choral and religious music, but this was also the beginning of the French operatic tradition -- represented here by excerpts from Lully's "Isis" and "Armide" and "Amadis" -- and the height of the French harpsichord school, represented by composers François and Louis Couperin, Rameau, d'Anglebert, and more. There are even a few tracks of chamber music by François Couperin, Dandrieu, and La Barre. The collection should please anyone with an interest in this historical era and its culture or those looking to expand their knowledge of early Baroque music as it developed in France.
