Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Olympics, Hippocratic Oath, spartan, gymnasium—all words that could fit into a modern day conversation—trace their beginnings to the ancient Greeks, a civilization that started about 3,000 B.C. The golden era of achievement for this culture spanned 2,000 years and was characterized as vibrant, active, and individualistic. In fact, much about this time should feel familiar to us—the architecture, the writing, and the art, for it formed the foundation of modern Western Civilization. Through these pages, learn more about this intensely rich period of time by making crafts that replicate the arts of ancient Greece. A total of eight projects are included, each following a chapter that describes an aspect of life at the time. In the chapter about warfare, you learn the ancient story of the Trojan horse, presented as a gift to the enemy, but secretly holding a belly of Greek soldiers. The project that follows gives a materials list and step-by-step instructions for you to make a small Trojan horse. This format is effective in bringing the information in the text right to your fingertips. Also included are a timeline, glossary, and other resources to help you learn more about the ancient Greeks. Part of the "Crafts of the Ancient World" series. 2002, The Rosen Publishing Group,

VOYA
The new Crafts of the Ancient World series usefully fills a niche, integrating history and art curriculums. Each volume begins with a six-page historical overview, followed by eight two-page chapters on specific aspects of the culture. Each mini-chapter is followed by a related project. This review addresses two books in this series, one about the Ancient Greeks and the other about the Aztecs. In The Ancient Greeks, "Warfare" appears with instructions for creating a model Trojan Horse. Straightforward project instructions and illustrations, clear photographs of historic works, and For More Information sections that include organizations, books, and Web sites are all favorable features. The problems, however, emerge in the details. For instance, both volumes include sawdust clay projects requiring use of the stove, but there is no warning that these projects should be done under adult supervision. Although numerous activities involve clays of various sorts, the pottery projects are all paper based. Even the choice of crafts raises some questions. The Aztecs includes instructions to create a chacmool statue, an item historically used to hold the heart and blood of human sacrifices. Students might appreciate the bloody history, but some adults could question its appropriateness. The historical information in The Ancient Greeks seems more complete than in The Aztecs, which glosses over the end of the famous empire and groups all of Central America into Mexico. Although there are photo credits at the end of each volume, the authors neglect to cite the origins of the paintings and drawings in The Aztecs. Whether these are works of Aztecs or Europeans is a significant distinction, especiallybecause several projects recommend looking at the artwork in the book for stylistic ideas. The Ancient Greeks indicates where various works originated. Libraries with a high demand for historical craft projects should check out the individual volumes of this series before purchase. The Ancient Greeks would be a welcome addition to most history and craft collections, whereas The Aztecs is best as a craft reference. Other titles in the series include books on ancient Roman, Hebrew, and Egyptian cultures. Glossary. Index. Illus. Photos. Maps. Further Reading. Chronology.
