Meet the Author

Janice D. Green loves children. Even though Mrs. Green holds a Masters in Library Science Degree from the University of South Carolina, she is still a kid at heart. She captures the hearts of children as she reads to them (probably because she loves the stories so much herself.) Another place Mrs. Green captures the hearts of children is in the great outdoors where she loves to share God’s creation with them. She loves to help them catch caterpillars, make dandelion necklaces, or to make grass-blade whistles. She sees the out-of-doors as God’s playground.Mrs. Green’s engaging account of creation has more to offer children than mere entertainment. The Creation is written to increase confidence in the accuracy of the Biblical account.Janice D. Green's second book, The First Christmas, was published in 2012, and the ebook is now available.

Read to my 7 and 5 year old boys:
Janice Green is a quilter. The illustrations she uses are actually quilt blocks she did in colorful fabrics related to the story. Usually, it bugs me when an artist skips the dinosaurs, but this book only has about 4 animals in the picture with Adam: of course there wasn’t space for the T-Rex!
The main section of each short page of text is a “paraphrase” of the Bible. She just took the original words and simplified it to a young child’s level. Hebrew scholars would pull their hair out with some of what she leaves out, but they aren’t the people Mrs. Green wrote for. Personally, I added little bits Mrs. Green had left out to every page, but I’m always doing that!
What we enjoyed most, besides the pictures, were the questions at the bottom of each page. Basic things like “how do you feel in a dark place?” or “what is your favorite animal?” help kids connect. Others help them think through why God did what He did and how Adam and Eve must have felt after their sin. Each page of text had about four questions to get kids’ brains going.
The Creation is a short book, only 16 pages of pictures and text, making it a pleasant one-sitting read. Each day of Creation gets its own illustration and word page closing with the account of Adam and Eve’s Fall.
The book doesn’t get into how God planned to rescue them; you’ll need to discuss Jesus some other way, but that’s no biggy. I was pleased with how quickly my 5 year old understood the connection between Adam as “ruler” and how his sin affected the rest of creation. Wording big concepts like that for little ones isn’t easy!
At the back, there’s a full page for parents with encouraging reminders of the importance of remembering God as Creator. Last is a page of ideas for making your own Creation Quilt and mini-bio of the author.

"The Creation" by Janice D. Green is a kid-friendly retelling of God's formation of our universe. This book is wonderful for young children, as it uses vivid illustrations to accompany the easy to read story of the Creation. I have a young child, and thought this book was perfect - simplistic in its message, language that a young child can easily understand (after all, the story starts to lose its meaning if you have to stop every few sentences and respond to, "Mommy, what does that mean?"). I thought that the story itself was true to the Bible, and was something the whole family could enjoy reading together. Each page of the story also offers up question prompts for parents to ask the children, which I thought was a great addition. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who has a special young child in their life, and would like for them to learn more about how our world was created.

    A Unique Retelling!

The Creation is a re-telling of the story of creation, as found in the book of Genesis. This book covers the 7 days of God's creation as well as a short discussion of Adam and Eve. A short book filled with colorful illustration in the form of quilt squares, this book is quite unique from others of this sort. Each page offers a matching illustration and discussion questions to go along with the story for that illustration as well as a scripture reference.

Most appropriate for children ages 5-9, there is plenty to offer for children younger and older within this book. A very easy way to present the story of creation to young children through pictures and short stories while offering opportunity for depth with older children through scripture reading and discussions. A great way for parents to share a familiar Bible story with their children with lots of room for growth and learning.

The end of the book offers a parents section with discussion and background in regards to the story itself along with a family activity of making a creation quilt. A really great book that is engaging, educational and scripturally sound. A book that is sure to remain a part of our library for years to come and one I recommend.

I received this book free from the publisher through the BookCrash . com book review program, which requires an honest, though not necessarily positive, review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s CFR Title 16, Part 255: “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising.”I was in no way compensated for this review.
