The Crosby Christmas Sessions

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - John Bush
Compared to the importance that radio programmers and Muzak directors place on them each year, Bing Crosby's Christmas material hasn't received much in the way of critical respect or reissue devotion. The Crosby Christmas Sessions should rectify that situation nicely; this is no simple reprise of "White Christmas" and the like.
It's a rip-snorting compilation of material that's as sparkling and clear as a sunny December morning, and includes a fair number of performances that sound the opposite of the usual staid holiday chestnut just check out Der Bingle and Ella Fitzgerald trading zany lyrical updates on "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer". Much of Crosby's Christmas output was recorded for his radio shows during the late '40s and early '50s, and even though it sounded great originally all of it committed to modern tape, it's never sounded better or clearer. Even his infamous duet with David Bowie on "The Little Drummer Boy/Peace on Earth" from a 1977 TV special is a direct transfer from the original tape videotape, that is and sounds great. This isn't the comprehensive collection it could've been or perhaps should've been, but The Crosby Christmas Sessions is a barn-stormer of a holiday release, one of the essential purchases for anyone who wants to hear Christmas done right.
