About the Author

Leonid Nikolaievich Andreyev (1871–1919) was a seminal Russian playwright, novelist, and short-story writer, often regarded as a father of Expressionism in Russian literature. Born in Oryol, Russia, Andreyev initially pursued a career in law, studying in Moscow and Saint Petersburg. However, his passion for writing soon led him to journalism, where he worked as a police-court reporter for a Moscow daily. This experience provided him with profound insights into the human condition, which he masterfully translated into his literary works.

Andreyev's literary journey commenced earnestly in 1898 with the publication of his short story "Bargamot and Garaska." His unique narrative style and exploration of complex psychological themes quickly garnered attention, leading to a lasting friendship with renowned author Maxim Gorky. Through Gorky's influence, Andreyev became associated with the Moscow Sreda literary group and contributed to various literary collections.

Throughout his career, Andreyev was known for his versatility, producing an array of short stories, novels, and plays. His works often delved into themes of existential angst, societal decay, and the human psyche's intricacies. Notable among his plays is "He Who Gets Slapped" (1915), which has been adapted into several films and remains one of his most performed works internationally.

Despite facing personal tragedies, including the death of his first wife, and the political upheavals of his time, Andreyev remained a prolific writer. He was an active participant in social and political debates, using his writings to critique and reflect upon the societal issues of his era. In his later years, disillusioned by the Bolshevik Revolution, he relocated to Finland, where he continued to write until his death in 1919.

Andreyev's legacy endures, with his works continuing to be studied and celebrated for their profound psychological insight and innovative narrative techniques.
