Upton Sinclair Jr. (September 20, 1878 – November 25, 1968) was one of the most famous American authors of the 20th century, and even though he wrote in several genres, he is best known for his works about society. In The Jungle, Sinclair’s descriptions of conditions in the U.S. meat packing industry were so vivid and breathtaking that they caused a public furor that resulted in the 1906 Pure Food and Drug Act and the Meat Inspection Act. Time magazine would later note he was "a man with every gift except humor and silence."
Given Sinclair’s stature, it was fitting that he would be the editor of The Cry for Justice, which he compiled and edited in the years after writing The Jungle. The book included a written introduction by Jack London, who would die an untimely death the year after it was published. The Cry for Justice shows American Progressivism at its heyday, including over 600 works across 17 chapters, including chapters about Poverty, Jesus, the Church, War, Socialism, Revolt, Humor, and more. It includes passages and poetry from Charles Dickens, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, Plutarch, the Bible, Lord Tennyson, and hundreds of others.
This edition of The Cry for Justice is specially formatted with a Table of Contents and is illustrated with over a dozen pictures of Sinclair, London, various authors, and pictures taken by social activist and author Jacob Riis, who documented poverty in New York City in the early 20th century.
