Once again, Grand Master Andre Norton treats us to her wonderful Witch World - this time in a land called High Hallack. Once you get used to the two primary character narrative the tale just speeds along. Action, mystery, lots of drama, and a little romance all blend together to keep you wanting to finish as soon as you can so that you can start the story all over again! It does help if you have read any of the other books set in the Witch World, but it isn't necessary. "The Crystal Gryphon" stands very well all by itself. I heartily recommend joining the hordes of fans enjoying all of Ms. Norton's works. I look forward to have the other books in this series available for my Nook Color ("Gryphon in Glory" and "Gryphon's Eyrie")... hint hint Barnes & Noble!

Glad they are fianlly starting to republish some old favorites in E format. this 3 book series takes place in the "witch world" a place where the Old Ones have left, for the most part, but their legacy remains in ruins , shadowed places, and artifacts.
You follow two young "axe wed", Kerovan, heir to Ulmsdale and cursed/blessed to be of mixed heritage, the old blood has left its mark on him. This visably sets him apart form the other Dalesfolk. He constantly strugles against the prejedist and fear his appearance engenders. For all he tries to be as normal as he can be.
Joisan "axe wed" to Kerovan at the age of 8 tries to learn all she needs to know help her husband, she has never met, run Ulmsdale. She finds a thurst for knowledge of the Old Ones and the "Lady Gunnora" .With her knowledge ans skills she aids her Lord in his stuggles.

This was an engaging read. I enjoyed the characters and the world they lived in. Unfortunately, it was poorly edited. In places, I wondered if something went wrong while uploading because the errors were so frequent and it didn't seem logical that any writer of this caliber would not have noticed during revision. (I read both this one and it's sequel. Both had errors. Seems like the sequel had a lot more of them.) If Andre Norton were to get this edited properly, I would raise my rating to four stars. I would still recommend this book to anyone who loves fantasy, and can easily see Norton rising through the ranks. She's a fine writer. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback.
