Heavily researched writing provides insight into the cultural significance of all things body art, from the more traditional to the more hardcore. Individuals embrace such customs for a variety of cultural and personal reasons, which are examined in great depth. The decision-making process as well as what to expect from procedures in terms of pain, costs, health concerns, aftercare, and removal are also discussed. The differences between modification and mutilation are mentioned, too. Coverage is also given to varying licensing requirements and the lack of standard legislation to regulate the industry. Much of the series aims to prevent regret, stressing the need for going about the process responsibly; awareness of the risks involved, proper sanitary practices, and the importance of self-education are emphasized. Stigmas and changing public acceptance are also highlighted in what has become an increasingly visible norm. VERDICT Information-rich material and mass appeal make this a valuable purchase for older teen nonfiction collections.
