If you like great graphic novels

There's a verse from Ecclesiastes that says there is nothing new under the sun. That may be true, but every once in a while someone comes along and surprises you with a novel take on an old idea. 'Damned Volume 1' is one of those wonderful surprises. If you are like me, and you are constantly on the lookout for unique and interesting graphic novels, then you should pick up a copy of 'Damned'. It's extremely well-written, with an interesting storyline, and excellent artwork. The book deals with gansters in the thirties, but with a big twist. Side by side with everday bootleggers and gangland criminals are actual demons, who compete directly with their human counterparts for supremacy in the criminal underworld. And of course, what would a world filled with demons dressed in business suits and wielding tommy guns be without a few curses? The main character in 'Damned' is a man who has been uniquely cursed. If he is killed, anyone who touches him suffers the same fate while he simultaneously comes back to life. It makes him an extremely dangerous man, and it sets up quite a dilemma for anyone trying to do him in. Volume 1 revolves around a missing bookkeeper, who happens to be a demon. The cursed hero Eddie is tasked by Big Al, a demon gang boss, with finding out what happened to the bookkeeper, and the story takes off from there. Filled with fascinating characters with complex histories and relationships, including the all-too-human demons, and an exciting climax, Volume 1 has left me wanting to read the next volume in the series. Highly recommended.
