Editorial Reviews

VOYA - C. Allen Nichols
With the current trend toward natural and herbal health remedies, Goldish's work is timely. He describes the possible dangers that exist when using herbal stimulants-even though they may well be natural, organic, and legal. The history of herbal drugs, herbal abuse, and legal issues are also reviewed in the book, and a chapter suggesting various avenues teens may seek for help with their abuse is included. Banfield's contribution adequately describes a twelve step program and the myriad of problems that can be successfully addressed through participation in one. From first-hand knowledge, she reviews the individual steps, explains how the programs work, and how they can be effective. She also provides pointers on how to become involved in a local program. "Just the facts, ma'am" aptly describes the content presented in these two books from the Drug Abuse Prevention Library. Other recently released titles are Ecstacy: The Danger of False Euphoria by Anne Alvergue, Drugs and the Legalization Debate by Jennifer Croft, PCP: High Risk on the Streets, and Drugs and Denial by Wendy Klein. The two titles reviewed cover their subjects in a broad manner, with large print, presumably making them accessible to teens with reading difficulties. These shorter works also contain photographs that are obviously staged and add little to the content, especially since some are not well placed within the text. These books are most appropriate for use by elementary through junior high school patrons, although some high school students may find the information helpful. Glossary. Index. Illus. Photos. Further Reading. Appendix. Note: This review was written and published to address two titles-Inside Recovery and Dangers of Herbal Stimulants. VOYA Codes: 2Q 2P M J (Better editing or work by the author might have warranted a 3Q, For the YA reader with a special interest in the subject, Middle School-defined as grades 6 to 8 and Junior High-defined as grades 7 to 9).
School Library Journal
Gr 5-9Standard series titles that present their subjects with some historical data and then explore issues pertaining to teens. The sentences are short and easy to read. Average-to-poor quality black-and-white and color photos have little relation to the texts, showing teens engaged in various activities, medical vehicles, and drug bottles. Each book lists appropriate organizations with phone numbers, e-mail addresses, and Web sites. Ecstasy discusses how the drug MDMA affects the mind and body, clearly outlining the dangers. Despite the single topic focus, it doesn't provide much more information than Paul Robbins's chapter on Ecstasy in Designer Drugs (Enslow, 1995). Drugs and the Legalization Debate presents the pros and cons calmly and fairly. It also discusses drug abuse and penalties, with a brief look at how other countries deal with the issue. Herbal Stimulants discusses "natural" substances teens might be tempted to try to get high, lose weight, get stronger, have more energy, or relieve medical problems. The author cautions against the perception that substances are safe because they are "natural." With their large print and full-color pictures, these titles look more user friendly than those in the "Drug Library" series (Enslow) and are serviceable additions.Martha Gordon, formerly at South Salem Library, NY
