Overview

Ever wonder what it takes to swallow a sword? Or how someone can walk across hot coals without burning the bottoms of his or her feet? Well wonder no more! The Daredevil's Manual offers a behind-the-scenes, no-hold-barred look at these stunts and many others —straight from the men and women who have turned them into an art form.

Today's modern daredevils breathe fire, eat live scorpions, parachute off buildings, juggle chainsaws, and catch arrows in mid-flight, barehanded. Author Ben Ikenson, a longtime daredevil admirer, exposes the mysteries of these and dozens more of the most celebrated stunts in the world through first-person interviews with the daredevils themselves.

The Daredevil's Manual offers step-by-step explanations of how the most fearless daredevils in the world perform their incredible feats of derring-do. Detailed drawings and descriptions examine how:

  • John Hall sails a motorcycle through a flaming wall of fire!
  • Harley Newman escapes from hundreds of feet of plastic wrap encasing his body!
  • Tom Comet balances a running lawn mower—on his chin!
  • ...and much, much more!

Ben Ikenson is a speechwriter, journalist, and lifelong admirer of the daredevil and the art of the stunt. His work has appeared in numerous book and magazines, and he is the author of Patents: Ingenious Inventions—How They Work and How They Came to Be.

    A Must Read

I'm a person who thrives on challenges. I have a bunch of Guinness records and infact I'm writing this review from China where I took a few days off from my vacation to break a record on the Great Wall. But one of the highlights of my trip was getting my hands on The Daredevil's Handbook. It is awesome! I feel like a kid who has just been given the keys to the local candy store! Ben Ikenson is an excellent writer who has written the definitive book on daredevil stunts. He interviews masters in the field who reveal their innermost secrets but, unlike magic where the secret to a trick ruins it's entertainment value, knowing the inner workings of a daredevil feat only adds to our appreciation and admiration of the performer. Getting tips on how to tightrope blindfolded without a net from one of the legendary Wallendas is inspiring and hearing how to dive from 29 feet off the ground into 12 inches of water from the man who admits he is frightened every time he does it makes you shake your head in amazement. But these people are not crazy. They are just like you and me except they are fulfilling their dreams and proving that nothing is impossible! The guy who makes his living throwing knives at assistants who are stuck onto a spinning board threw his first knife into a tree on a dare at the age of 50 and the blindfolded fellow who catches arrows barehanded in midflight is a Karate instructor who learned to do his feat in a few weeks so he could get on national television. It has been my lifelong motto that if another human being has done something so can you. Sure, you might not want to wrestle an alligator or swallow swords (Mr. Ikenson tells you how) but you could if you really had a great yearning to. And that is what I get from reading this entertaining and enlightening book - the indomitable quality of the human spirit ... and maybe one or two new ideas for Guinness records!

Knife Throwing and a whole lot more

OK, I'm in Chapter 24. But I read the entire book from cover to cover and to say the least, BEN IKENSON DID A GREAT JOB IN COVERING ALL THE WILD AND CRAZY THINGS DAREDEVIL'S DO. I'm proud to be part of Ben's work and hope that all other readers enjoy the entire book as much as I did.
