Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Liz Rafferty works at the Ridley Hotel Health Club. As she closes the pool for the night, a shadow at the bottom of the pool rises to the surface and grabs the toe of her sneaker. She screams. The shadow disappears. Liz tries to convince herself it's only her fears, yet things do not return to normal at the Hotel Health Club. Guests are pick-pocketed, food is stolen, photo ID cards disappear and thieves steal two of the hotel's valuable antique sofas. Then, Liz discovers a foot gap in the wall that is covered by vines and used as a secret exit from the pool. But that's not all. Soon, guests start showing up dead. Mr. C.L. Jones is found inside his burned car on the road. Mr. Kamara is found floating, face down, dead in the pool, while a woman who claims to be Mr. Kamara's sister shows up to claim his locker items. Something terribly wrong is going on at the Hotel Health Club and Liz, with her friend Fran, are determined to solve the mystery. Nixon's writing is lively and engaging in her well-crafted mystery story. The novel is a page-turner, and readers will find themselves hanging on until the last page. 2003, Dell Yearling, Ages 15 to 17.

The dark and deadly pool is about a sixteen year old named Liz. She gets this job at this nice hotel. Liz has dreams of conducting the houston symphony orchestra one day when she grows up. This story is about mysterious events that takes place in the hotel and the ending is really surprising. Will she choose fran or the gorgeous boy tall boy she always wanted? This story has everything a good book needs. It is thrilling, surprising, romantic, and humorous! Definitely a great book.

This book was not my most favorite, but I liked how Lowery Nixon put everything in good detail especially, the pool. The characters are sometimes mysterious, funny, romantic, and dangerous. If you want to read a great mystery with good imagery read this book.

This book wasn't as good as Joan's others. It is very repetitive. It is not very suspenseful.

Well this one actually pretty good. Looking for a quick but suspenseful filled read, I keep coming back to these books. Been reading a lot of the author's books lately. And with most, not all, the ending seemed to either happen early or it makes you want more. The suspense was good and at times I thought Fran was a little forward. But liked that he was honest at least. And with Mary's "dilemma," it so reminded me of the manga series Love Com. Either way, adorable. At first I was like, wait wasn't there supposed to be a ghost? Then near the end I was like, ohhh okay then, now it makes sense. Another good read. Looking forward to reading the author's other books. And the sequel sounds fun.

The Dark and Deadly Pool is a mystery piece written for young adults. The story is about a murder that young girl solves. I find this a good book; it gives you a lot of clues but does not give the answer away. If you enjoy reading a mystery, this is a book for you. It's by a good author Joan Lowery. She will give you clues that make you think you have solved the mystery, but you will never guess who has robbed the Ridley Hotel. I find this an excellent book because I love the way she gives clues and put in detail. Mary Elizabeth's summer job at the Ridley Hotel sounds good but when she finds a body in the pool her life changes forever. Mary Elizabeth also known, as Liz is a 16-year-old girl who is really tall but clumsy. She can be brave but in the dark it's a hole other story. Francis is the same age as Liz but is way shorter; he works as room service at the Ridley Hotel and helps solve the mystery together with Liz. The author uses the right places for the right times, the authors style, as you will read is really mystery. The theme is mystery. This book is pretty hard to compare with other books; it really depends on your taste of books. The goals of this book are to keep you interested and maybe a little scared. This is a good mystery book because it gives you a lot of clues with out giving away the ending.. This book has achieved its goals, at least with me. I was so interested in the book that I wanted to keep on reading, and it also scared me a little.
