Overview

No part of the world has been ripped apart this century as often and as thoroughly as Europe. Dark Continent traces the path of Europe over the last 100 years and frames it around the prime struggle between fascism, communism, and liberal democracy. Mazower's excellent analysis does not search for "the end of history" in the triumph of liberal democracy, but rather sees Europe beginning another of its long history's renaissances. For someone who wants to understand "the idea of Europe," Mazower's work is the most reliable modern study.
