Frog is ready to settle down for the night. He is just about to jump in the water when he spies a pond monster coming out of the dark reeds. Frog and his friends search for the pond monster two more times. Each time, the monster is bigger and scarier than the last. In the end, Frog and friends are all amused when mouse accidentally reveals the mystery of the pond monster. M. Christina Butler and Jane Chapman make being in the dark almost seem like fun. This story, along with playing in the dark with light and shadows, is a surefire way to help take the pressure off a child who fears the dark.

I purchased The Dark Dark Night because my daughter LOVES frogs (there is nothing better than a frog at my house), and I was familiar with the illustrator, Jane Chapman. She illustrated the bear books, Bear Shores on, Bear Feels Scared, Bear Wants More and on and on, and in fact, the characters of The Dark Dark Night do indeed look like bear's friends making them an already familiar bunch with just one adorable addition. This is a story about a bunch of friends who are afraid of their shadows. First, frog sees his shadow, and runs off to find a friend. The two friends see an even bigger shadow, on we go from there, until through one little mouse they realize they've been a silly little bunch and have been running from their shadows every time! Just scary enough for toddlers while still being fun and full of valuable concepts, such as, shadows, happy and scared, size (as the shadow grows). Adorably illustrated with familiar friends-enjoy.
