Overview

The New York Times bestselling WINGS OF FIRE saga soars to the mysterious land of the NightWings, where Starflight must face a terrible choice -- his tribe, or his friends?

In the shadows, trouble is brewing. . .

The mysterious NightWings keep everything hidden, from their home and their queen to their allegiance in the war. Now they've kidnapped their own dragonet of destiny, and Starflight is finally meeting the rest of his tribe -- whether he wants to or not.

The NightWings have also kidnapped several innocent RainWings, now trapped in the dark, barren, miserable place that is the NightWing kingdom. Starflight wants to help the RainWings, but he's busy saving his own scales and trying to find a way back to his friends. The fate of two kingdoms rests in his talons, and with no one to save him, Starflight will have to find a way to be brave . . . before it's too late.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
The fourth book in the “Wings of Fire” series, The Dark Secret centers on Starflight and the disturbing discoveries that he makes when he arrives in his homeland. The first two-thirds of the book move at a very slow pace and even for one who was hooked on the series it will be a bit of a slog. There is too much introspection and self-doubt exhibited by Starflight to make him an appealing character. As he learns about the terrible things that the Nightwings are doing and the absolute danger that they face in their homeland, he must make some real decisions. The action really picks up in the last third of the book as he tries to save Rainwing prisoners, return to his friends and avoid the cataclysmic ending to his tribe’s homeland. In the end, Starflight does exhibit the bravery expected of one of the Dragonets of Prophecy and manages to help his tribe find a way to start a new life among the Rainwings. Worth reading because it is a component of the series, but as noted only the last third really moves at a good pace. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot; Ages 9 to 12.

My 4th grader has been reading this series since it started (he was in 3rd grade then). He has really enjoyed them and looks forward to each new book. In fact we preordered this one and every day after we ordered it he kept asking if it had been sent yet. He has enjoyed learning about each of the dragonets and their backgrounds. He also likes the over all tale of how they will save their world. If you have a good reader in 2nd to 5th grade who likes dragons and fantasy I think they will really enjoy this series.

This is a good book ! I love what happens... BUT I WONT GIVE A SPOILER. I roleplay a warrior cat named Nightwing lol she's a black shecat with deep purple eyes haha. When I saw Nightkit on the list I'm like oooo lol. So I played her for my love of Wings Of Fire! I can't wait for the second book. I couldn't stop reading and I read for 4 hours straight. I was interested in the NightWing secret and their queen was... interesting. (Spoilers are rotten.) If you read this book, you should be proud you took the time to read something good ! - Nightwing, formerly of BeamClan, now a loner (soon, a dragon's pet) in Pyrrhia

I had high expectations for this book. And they were surpassed greatly. From how the last book ended, I was left on a cliffhanger. I couldn’t wait for the next book to come out, and got it the first chance I had. I just had the feeling I would enjoy this book. The main reason I chose to read this book is because I had loved the first installments, but I love this one even more. I enjoyed the many plot twists and exciting scenes that this book had to offer. So, this book takes place from Starflight’s point of view, and SPOILER ALERT: takes place at the nightwing kingdom. Anyway, Starflight is stuck in this conflict where he is trying to rescue the rainwings from the clutches of the nightwings. I really liked this book because there is a lot of action, and many questions answered. I held on to every word as the book neared the end. There is so much suspension. If you didn’t suspect that there were a second set of dragonets of destiny from the end of the third book, then here you find out if there is. I definitely recommend that you read this book. I would, in no doubt, give this book 5 stars.
