Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
A fun and fact filled introduction to dinosaurs, this book is illustrated with amusing, appealing cartoons. Volume three of the series "Cartoon History of the Earth," this guide also includes an index and glossary. Part of the "Cartoon History of the Earth" series. 2001, Kids Can Press, $16.95. Ages 8 to 12. Reviewer: M. Henebry SOURCE: Parent Council, September 2001 (Vol. 9, No. 1)
Children's Literature
By today's standards we think that elephants are huge. Can you imagine an animal they weighs as much as 50 elephants? The Brachiosaurus was just one of those creatures. Throw in a Cetiosaurus at 30 tons and an Apatosaurus at 28 tons and you have quite a large gathering. The Pterosaurs may be what you think of when you think of flying dinosaurs. With their wings made of thin skin, they are what we see in cartoons today. But did you know that there were dinosaurs that flew and had wings? Yes, the Archaeopteryx was one of the first birds known. With a good glossary and cute drawings, this book is great for that budding dinosaur lover. It is part of the "Cartoon History of the Earth" series. 2001, Kids Can Press, $16.95 and $7.95. Ages 8 up. Reviewer: Scott S. Floyd<%ISBN%>1553370732

Gr 3-6-Both of these books take factual information and put it into a cartoon format, placing the fascinating world of history into fun and entertaining packages. Dinosaurs kicks off with a discussion of the species' extinction and then looks at the development of the Earth. The text is easy, with short descriptive wording. Blocks of text are broken up by large, colorful cartoons that show witty dinosaurs conversing with one another. The second title looks at life during the Stone Age, with animals chatting or bantering in dialogue balloons, and follows the same format. This is a clear and clever way to introduce these topics. The cartoon strips are well executed, as is the general overall design. Two books that are entertaining as well as educational.-John A.
