Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1-An outdoor wedding is about to take place and a little girl named Camellia sits in the garden, daydreaming. When the flowers suddenly come to life, Sweet William proposes to Columbine, and then all the flowers join in the celebration: "The bluebells rang, dingdong, dingdong./The tulips sang a wedding song." The story ends when the real wedding begins, with Camellia as the flower girl. Lillegard's rhymed verse has its charm but never does much more than move things along. The fresh images and inherent music that characterize the best poetry just aren't here. The illustrations are more successful, especially in their glorious use of color. Barron's background as an animator shows in his lively sense of movement, fluid lines and forms, and the appealing sense of character the flowers take on. Camellia's expressions don't come to life as well. Overall, an interesting premise that doesn't quite gel and will probably have somewhat limited appeal.-Lauralyn Persson, Wilmette Public Library, IL
