Editorial Reviews

Tom Piccirilli is a genius at characterization.. . His sardonic wit makes The Dead Past a great read... simultaneously mesmerizing, frightening, and poignant ... a brilliant whodunit.
Ed Gorman
Kendrick is one part Matt Scudder, one part aging Huck Finn, and one part Archie Goodwin ... The person who summons him home is not a grizzled, but exasperated chief of police, not a swooning dame in danger—but his own grandmother, who is every bit as snoopy as Miss Marple, and every bit as tart as Joan Rivers… [a] blend of hard-boiled and cozy elements gives the book its wit, warmth and appeal ... one of the best written and most enjoyable mysteries I've read in a long time.

I was about to discard this book to make room on my library shelves when I started reading the first two pages. I went on to finish it that same day. I enjoyed the characterizations and the mystery was engrossing. I plan to order the second book in the series now and promote it to my patrons. One question I would like to ask the author is: Why didn't you write a book about the mystery surrounding the deaths of Jonathan's parents. The retelling of the story in this book sounds like it would have made a great mystery. Oh, well, too late now.
