Children's Literature
Tiny Fay is frightened on her daily walk to and from school by a huge black dog who just wants to be a friend. With the help of her father and a piece of bacon, she overcomes her fear to become fast friends with the dog. The lively, perfectly executed illustrations make this book a success. Fay's emotions are perfectly apparent from her down turned whiskers to her delight in snuggling up with the dog. Each page is marvelously executed to emphasize the differences in size between the small, brown, pink eared mice and their surroundings. The scene showing Fay's father dragging a mirror is a delight. Best of all is Fay's dress which is covered with diminutive red and black ladybugs. This is sure to be a hit at story time. 2003, North-South Books, Ages 4 to 6.—Sylvia Firth
