The national bestseller that shocked the nation--The Death of the West is an unflinching look at the increasing decline in Western culture and power.

The West is dying. Collapsing birth rates in Europe and the U. S., coupled with population explosions in Africa, Asia and Latin America are set to cause cataclysmic shifts in world power, as unchecked immigration swamps and polarizes every Western society and nation.
The Death of the West details how a civilization, culture, and moral order are passing away and foresees a new world order that has terrifying implications for our freedom, our faith, and the preeminence of American democracy.

The Death of the West is a timely, provocative study that asks the question that quietly troubles millions: Is the America we grew up in gone forever?

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
Three-time presidential candidate Patrick J. Buchanan believes that the West is dying. Its rapidly declining birth rates, coupled with population explosions elsewhere, have helped set in motion shift in world power. The resolutely outspoken Buchanan argues that unchecked immigration in the United States and Europe is draining their strength and that the Western countries (including Russia) are endangering their own chances for economic survival. A love 'em, hate 'em, read 'em author.
Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
"Historians may one day call `the pill' the suicide tablet of the West," writes former presidential candidate Buchanan in this cri de coeur regarding the perils that await Western civilization. And he is correct in his assessment that the advent of artificial contraception brought about huge changes in the ways American and European cultures dealt with sex, children and family. Buchanan, a staunch Roman Catholic and a conservative, feels that these changes were socially and politically disastrous. Worried about the declining birth rate of European-Americans and increased immigration from nonwhite countries, Buchanan predicts that people who are now celebrating diversity "will spend their golden years in a Third World America." Along with shifting racial demographics, Buchanan also frets about the changes in morality "rampant promiscuity and wholesale divorce and tax-payer funding of abortion." Buchanan is equally upfront about his position on homosexuality: "had the killers of Matthew Shepard chosen a sixteen-year-old girl rather than a twenty-one-year-old gay man, her rape-murder would have been to me an even greater evil." Fearful that American is being "de-Christianized," Buchanan argues that "while the prognosis is not good," America must reevaluate itself and reclaim its white, Christian origins; despite the current "coarseness of her manners, the decadence of her culture, or the sickness in her soul," the nation is worth saving. Buchanan's passionately expressed ideology will be too extreme for most readers, and its proud bigotry is unlikely to play well even among most conservatives. Library Journal
Political commentator and presidential candidate Buchanan's prior book, A Republic, Not an Empire, criticized U.S. foreign policy. Here he censures virtually everything else about the United States and contemporary Western civilization, hardly confining himself to his opening premise that falling birthrates will lead to the West's inundation by more fertile peoples from elsewhere in the world. Buchanan believes that we are in the midst of a "civil war of the soul" because of our dying population; mass immigration by outsiders of "different colors, creeds, and cultures"; the support of elites for world government; and chasms of difference regarding religion, tradition, and morality. Readers who agree with Buchanan will savor every paragraph. Those who do not will soon put the book down. A necessary purchase for public libraries and for those academic libraries seeking to document contemporary political debate. [Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 9/15/01.] Robert F. Nardini, Chichester, NH Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
It's the Great White Hope pitted against the godless hordes in Buchanan's (A Republic, Not an Empire, 1999, etc.) stark worldview from the fringe right.

    Excellent, well documented

An excellent book that helped this 18 year old to see through the lies our society has saturated me with since I was able to walk. I recommend this book to anyone, especially white liberals, it may just open your eyes too.

Wake up and smell the coffee ... if it's not too late.

Well written. He has articulated what most people have witnessed in this country for some time now. This is no far right BS, but a clear picture of this country, and it's (very near) future.

    There's some wisdom here

This is an excellent read. I recommend this to anyone who thinks about the race issue rationally, it's not just skin color. Everyone is an individual and at this point in time, we are all more related genetically than we know. Race cannot be used as an excuse for minorities who are not minorities anymore.

    IM ARO-AMERICAN & I agree with Pat!

It's not racist to admitt that the western christian culture of the U.S. is superior to that of my third world ancestors, I was lucky to be born here. Unchecked mass immigration is destroying that world here in Europe and Japan.

when one speaks the truth, they become the target

The word "gumption" comes to mind when one reads this book. Pat Buchannan is a true American hero who is not afraid to speak the truth and take the bashing from the left. What a breath of fresh air to see in print what goes through my mind about what is happening to our country. Unfortunately, what he depicts is accurate and those who read this book must speak out and not squirm under the gun from those who would turn this country into a third world nation.

This is a MUST READ Liberal or Conservative!!!

I got this book as a gift. I have to give praise to Mr. Buchanan for having the courage to tell it like it is. This man is a God-Send to our country for sticking up the values this country holds dear. Immigration, Evil Pro-abortion zealots and Liberals are slowly but surely killing the soul of this Country. Conservatives and Republicans everywhere need to STAND UP, SPEAK UP, AND RISE UP!!! This is a must read.

A Must Read for Every American Conservative or Liberal!!!!

I got this book as a birthday present and being a Conservative person who has seen and learned through my own research that something is terribly wrong with America was very pleased with Mr. Buchanan's book. This is not a book that will please Liberals because as your mother probably said..Actions speak louder than words!! Mr. Buchanan's Courage to defy the politically correct mass-media and write this book is very much an eye opener and an indictment of the Liberal establishment in the Congress and the mainstream media for its callous indifference towards abortion, out-of-control immigration and Liberal policies that are killing the soul of this country. We need Conservatives who are willing to crash and burn for their convictions and to defy the present day "Liberal Fascism" that is the status quo of Modern Day America.

    ACCURATE AND NOT POLITICALLY CORRECT

Recommended reading if you're not a bleeding heart liberal. The truth is unfettered immigration will mark the end of America as we know it and political correctness takes the place of common sense. This book just says it like it is. There is nothing racist with America being America.

Like it or not, it's true

The people who hate this book and call Buchanan names, do so from the position of being in the "Guilty Majority". By the time the 21st century is half over, the decendents of these same people will be living in different world. One day, the West will be a powerless minority. And those who chose self-loathing today, will cry for their grandchildren tomorrow.

Accurate, but way over the edge

Despite what many people may say, Pat Buchanan is not a racist or a white supremacist. He is, however, a right-wing extremist, and a Christian fundamentalist. While he talks about the falling birthrates in Europe and America, and about the high birthrates elswhere, he is able to back up his statements with statistics and hard evidence. And yes, the white people of the world are indeed in the minority, but Buchanan then goes off and starts to exaggerate. He talks about Russia being overrun with Islamic militants and losing a chunk of Siberia to China. He talks about the impact on faith and freedoms we enjoy. This is a gross exaggeration. Most likely, what will happen is the West will not actually die, it will simply adapt to the ever-changing world environment like all civilizations have done throughout history. For example, in the 1920s when America was becoming more urbanized, advocates of small-town America talked about how we were on the brink of disaster and would soon be living in a world not dissimilar to the one Buchanan envisions. The reality is that society simply changes through time, and while it is likely that we may lose some of the things we grew up with, has every generation has been through it all.

    Racist?

Those who accuse Buchanan of racism have obivously never read a single one of his books, especially this one. His thesis is not about race, tis about cultura and values, neither of which is implicitly tied to race. This is book revealing, the gradual distintengration of 'American Culture,' if there is such a thing through the attrition of death and declinign birth rates. It is also a chronicle of how the vlaues of American culture have shifted to obselecence, leaving only a vacuum to be filled by any and all groups who have a value system fo any kind.

    subliminaly racist

This is the most idiotic book I have ever read. This book is subliminaly saying that white people are superior above all races and that is not true. Throughout history the whites have done way more harm than good to this country or any other and not everyone who reads this book will take it the way the author intends it to be taken. There is still racism and racial profiling going on today and I think this book is also subliminaly trying to encourage it. This book also talks about how the whites should mass produce again and restrict immigration in america, Which I think is going against the ideals that america once had. The whites are not more inteligent no one is and every one can be inteligent but, racism is keeping that from happening. I also believe this book is saying that whites are and have always been superior and that their superiority is starting to fall. Well guess what? they are not superior!!! white, black,blue,purple....HUMAN!!! we are all human and in this world together so deal with it! MR Buchanan I mean this as constructive critism so take it! You will always be surrounded by other races no matter how much or how little they produce and if you don't like it, then go back to Europe! because America is about immigration. I will never vote for you, I don't support you at all and I'm sorry but you will never get anything out of this book and you are an idiot in my opinion and in plenty of other peoples opinions who feel the exact same way I do, So I hope you know that i am not the only one. Good bye and good riddence MR Buchanan.

I loved it (and I'm a liberal atheist)

This is an excellent book discussing the 'birth dearth' in Western countries, and how large-scale immigration is completely changing America and Europe. He does slightly skew the statistics, however (birth rates are declining globally, and it's expected that even Mexico and India will fall to replacement levels within the next 50 years), but it's still mostly accurate. The chapter on 'La Reconquista', or the growing movement among Mexican immigrants to recapture the American Southwest for Mexico, is particularly chilling (and totally unrebutted in any of the reviews I've seen). And anyone (such as the poster below who posted four times calling Pat a 'Klansman') who claims this book is racist probably hasn't read it.

    Pat Buchanan 'A True American'

Mr Buchanan is right on the money with this book. But he wants more for America than for us to just read his books. He needs us to help him make it to the White House. It is a real shame that Mr Buchanan always get tossed aside near election time and his ideas are shut inside of him until the media wants his opinion(which is about once a year). Pat, you have recieved my vote in every election since you started in 92 and I will continue to vote for you until I die. Any person who wants this country to stay great(morally as well as economically) should do the same. If not then we will end up no better than a third world country.

    The Racist Bible

If you like to wear white sheets or swastikas, go ahead and purchase this book. If, however, you have an ounce of compassion and love for your fellow humans, meaning humans of all colors, sexuality, religion or creed, then please, do NOT fund this right-wing supremacist's political agenda. Want to read it? Get it from the library and decide for yourself what trash it is. Pat Buchanan, for all his pseudo-christian ranting, will be seething in hell for this rhetoric. Read 'Stupid White Men' by Michael Moore and do something to change the world for the better.

The Final Days Of The First World

And so we go into darkness; not with a wimper but with a Pill. PJ Buchannan's latest most timely text shows both the Right and the Left 'How The West Was Lost'. This heavily annotated tome outlines with disquiteing throughness the distruction of the American culture and the all too real posibility that The West might simply fade into history, if not in our lifetime, then in that of our grand-childern. Reguardless of your political persuasion, YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK!

    White Like Him?

Not since the 'Bell Curve' has a book been so motivated by bigotry. Assuming that many of Buchanan's fans would laud the book for its perverted bravery, a note to the wise: Read this book only if you want to surprise yourself with some of the most shameful examples of racism, ethnocentrism and homophobia in years. It's worth recognizing it to know exactly how to counter it...but you can do that at the library.
