Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
This is the seventh crime novel by Grimes, an American who writes wih assurance on the exploits of Scotland Yard's Richard Jury and his titled friend Malcolm Plant. They meet at The Deer Leap, a pub in Ashdown Dean where people and pets have been dying ``accidentally.'' Plant focuses his attentions on a solitary, 15-year-old girl who calls herself Carrie Fleet. She's an amnesiac, rescued from London lowlifes who had found the child and were using her to collect government money for her support. Carrie's unlikely savior is a baroness, living on drunken fantasies in the decayed splendor of her late husband's estate. In an isolated corner of the grounds, Carrie maintains a sanctuary for abused animals. Her zealous care makes her a suspect in the destruction of the local fox-hunting headquarters, but Jury casts his net elsewhere. In the last act of the witty and deeply moving drama, retribution for heinous crime is exacted. Here gentle Plant plays a role so utterly unexpected that readers will feel its impact for a long time. FAWNSTARS RISE-PROLOGUE

Melodystar and Searingwhisper padded along the quiet thunder path.<P> They where patrolling to find a place to settle their small close-knit clan. Melodystar saw a small patch of brambles that looked like it had a path behind it.<P> "Searingwhisper!" She called, padding towards the brambles.<br>"I may have found where we may be able to live!"<P> Searingwhisper padded over, his face showing the fear and disapointment that had haunted him his whole life.<br>"Are you sure?" He mewed, prepared for disapointment.<br> "Positive!" Melodystar called, bravely poking her head through the brambles. <br> "It looks uninhabit-Oh. My. Gosh." She broke off her own sentence, staring at the huge clearing.<P> "Searingwhisper!" She mewed, her voice full of awe.<P> The clearing was beautiful! You could see the stars through the dense patching of overhanging tree limbs, there was a small sapling in the middle of the clearing, and Melodystar even saw a few mice scrambling around and making nests.<P> Searingwhisper poked his head in and gasped. He saw everything his mate did, and knew it was perfect.<P> Melodystar carefully wiggled through the brables and paded to the sapling. She then slashed a crooked music note in its soft bark.<P> Searingwhisper followed Melodystar revrently. Melodystar leaped up on a tree that had fallen and bent in a perfect half circle. "I declare this clearing as Melodyclans, now and here after! May all cats who enter this sacred place of peace forever remember the bravery and courage that Melodystar and Searingwhisper, the founders of this clan! Searingwhisper!" Searingwhisper stepped forward. "I annouce you Searingwhisper, but not Searingwhisper the warrior, but Searingwhisper, deputy of Melodyclan!" Searingwhisper bowed his head, feeling that all the cats of Starclan were calling his name...<P>•••••••••••••<P> I hope you injoyed!! Charecter apps. would be helpful!~Seqyn&starf

A great story but a couple of little quibbles. I didn't really understand the point of the earlier deaths of the animals. I don't understand how the responsible got everyone away from the lab for the showdown. I didn't like how open ended the fate of the ultimate victim was.

That said, I loved that Carole-Ann and Mrs. Wasserman had actual roles to play. I loved that Melrose got his hands dirty and even made a bit of a connection with a child (he never seemed to like children much in the earlier novels). Several of the characters were written as almost completely unlikeable, and that led to a lack of sympathy for their plights. But, I did like the character development of some of the characters (Polly finally seems to be coming along).

The book club edition was formatted well with no obvious spelling/grammar errors.
