Overview

There’s a reason Chet Baker has become a modern legend. As both a trumpeter and singer, Baker conveyed a romantic sensitivity that cut right to the bone. Although he helped define the “cool” sound of 1950s West Coast jazz, Baker can’t be pigeonholed. All of his best work has a touchingly immediate quality that reaches beyond the typical jazz canon -- it can only be called great music, pure and simple. This superior collection provides a satisfying overview of Baker’s instrumental and vocal talents. Although far too much has been made of Baker’s personal tragedies, the jewels contained in this quality set restore his luster as a first-rate musical artist.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Scott Yanow
This fine sampler has music from most of the periods of trumpeter Chet Baker's career, programmed in chronological order. Baker is heard with the Gerry Mulligan Quartet ("Freeway"), leading his own quartet with pianist Russ Freeman (including "My Funny Valentine"), and on selections from 1964, 1965, 1977, and 1983 ("Stella By Starlight" with Stan Getz). Although far from complete, this CD does give listeners a good glimpse at Baker's playing and singing (he takes vocals on eight of the 13 numbers) and does not shy away from his underrated late-period work.
