How exactly are Leo, Piper, and Jason supposed to find a runaway table, dodge a band of party-loving Maenads (who just might be a little psychotic), and stave off a massive explosion...all in one hour or less?

With his trademark wit and creativity, Rick Riordan answers these questions and more in three never-before-seen short stories that provide vital back-story to the Heroes of Olympus and Percy Jackson books, with a bonus fourth story marking the publishing debut of Haley Riordan, the inspiration for Percy Jackson. Original art, enlightening character interviews and portraits, puzzles, and a quiz add to the fun in this action-packed collection.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Paula Rohrlick
Fans of Riordan's wildly popular series "Percy Jackson and the Olympians," which began with The Lightning Thief, will appreciate this collection of tales and activities. There are four new short stories about the misadventures of the teenage demigods: "The Diary of Luke Castellan," "Percy Jackson and the Staff of Hermes," "Leo Valdez and the Quest for Buford," and "Son of Magic." This last tale was written by Riordan's teenage son Haley, who, as Riordan explains, inspired the character of Percy. As in the novels, fantasy, adventure and humor abound as mythology meets the modern era. Other features of this volume include full-color character portraits, interviews with Hermes's snakes, word games, a map of Halycon Green's house, a decode-the-secret-message game based on the names of Greek and Roman gods, and a diagram of Bunker 9. Riordan, a former middle school teacher, knows mythology and his target audience well, and Percy's many followers will be thrilled by this addition to the chronicles of the Camp Half-Blood heroes. Meet the Author

Rick Riordan

Rick Riordan (www.rickriordan.com) is the author of three different mythology-based series for Disney-Hyperion: the best-selling Percy Jackson series, the Kane Chronicles, and The Heroes of Olympus series. The first book in the Kane Chronicles, The Red Pyramid, was a number 1 New York Times bestseller. The five books in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series have sold millions of copies, been published in more than thirty countries, and inspired a major motion picture. Rick's novels for adults include the hugely popular Tres Navarre series, winner of the top three awards in the mystery genre. He lives in San Antonio, Texas, with his wife and two sons.

Biography

Percy Jackson and the Olympians is a terrific YA series by former middle school teacher and mystery writer Rick Riordan that revamps Greek mythology in a fun, fresh way kids find enthralling. A trouble-prone teen with attention deficit disorder and dyslexia, Percy is the half-blood son of Poseidon, one of 12 Olympian gods making mischief right here in 21st-century America. Praised by critics, librarians, and teachers, the Percy Jackson books have been honored with numerous awards and appear consistently on The New York Times bestseller list.

The series grew out of a sequence of bedtime stories Riordan invented for his son Haley -- who, at eight, had just been diagnosed with learning disabilities. Although Haley was having trouble in school, he loved the Greek myths and asked his dad to tell him some stories about the gods and heroes. Riordan ran through the standards from mythology, then began to invent new tales featuring some of the same characters and introducing a brave boy hero enough like Haley to make things interesting!

Haley begged his father to write the stories down, and in 2005, The Lightning Thief was published to excellent reviews. It was an instant hit with preteens, who loved the concept of a kid much like themselves -- i.e., embroiled in the everyday problems of school, family, and relationships -- embarking on heroic quests, soothing vengeful gods, and battling monsters.

In addition to Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Riordan also writes books for adults, most notably a series of high-octane Tex-Mex thrillers featuring private investigator Jackson "Tres" Navarre, a complicated loner with an offbeat pedigree. (Tres -- pronounced "Trace" -- is a tai chi master with a Ph.D. in medieval literature who turns to detective work when he is unable to find a teaching job!) The first novel in the series, 1997's Big Red Tequila, scooped the Anthony and Shamus Awards, two of the three most prestigious prizes for Mystery & Crime fiction. Riordan completed the trifecta when his sequel, The Widower's Two-Step, won the coveted Edgar Award in 1999.

Between the two series, Riordan remains incredibly busy. For several years, he balanced writing with teaching English to middle school students. Reluctantly, he has left teaching (a career he thoroughly enjoyed) in order to write full-time, but he still harbors hopes that someday he'll return to the classroom. Meanwhile, he makes frequent visits to schools and enjoys meeting young readers on his book tours.

    Demigod diaries

This is the perfect example of a book you cannot put down. I read the whole book in less than 5 hours and i loved it! The diaries of luke castelleam was just what I wanted. I always wanted to know how luke and thalia met annabeth and i finally found it! Percy jackson and the staff of hermes was the perfect percy/annabeth story. I felt like rick riordan was trying to recreate the percy jackson adventures but fell slightly short, but i still loved it! Leo valdez and the quest for buford was amazing! I loved the fact that the group of demigods was the same and leo was so funny! All i was thinking when ifound put that piper and jason were an item is that reyna wouldnt like that! And last but not least, the son of magic! The writing debut of ricks son haley! It answered so many questions thatmany readers would have after reading the whole series. It also made me think differently about the demigods everyone knows and loves from the origional series. Dont get me wrong,i still love them, i just understand the demigods who fought for kronos more. Overall, i think this was the perfect book to keep anyone satisfied until the mark of athena on october 2nd. My overall comment is: watch out rick, haley's got an awesome future as an author ahead of him and he will likely surpass your amazing best selling records!

Thanks to anyone who is reading this. I know it is long and i hope you found it helpful!

    Ultimate Guide

I bet this quide wil be the longest pages, most stories, most games, and the best one published guide from Rick Riordan. I went to the Son of Neptune premeire or event, but my friend (not really a friend now, he's disgusting) ruined it by wanting to come. He wasn't at home when I went to pick him up. He came 20 minutes later. I really wanted to see Rick Riordan, the best author ever lived. So now I'm hoping that he will come again on October.

    Amazing but a bit boring

Everything was great and all but the son of magic was a bit boring to me. It took me days to finish the son of magic because i wasnt interested. Sorry haley riordan but you may need to humour your writing a bit and spice it up.
