Children's Literature - Barbara Troisi
The 3rd edition "Cornerstones of Freedom" series invites young readers to become history investigators—examine the evidence, people and witnesses to bring history to life. Setting the Scene introduces the beginnings of a complex United States democratic process, a set of rules compiled over 200 years ago that featured historic documents, premises and symbols. Four chapters follow and highlight the system as the new nation emerged. The rules modeled from the roots of ancient Greece and Rome reveal the leader's quest for a basic definition as the nation grew to modern day, addressing timely concerns related to ensuring citizen's rights and challenges encountered in the contemporary democracy. Extra features add detail and depth of information. The Story Continues (back matter) focuses on the responsibilities of the citizens to maintain freedom for all. Sidebars spotlight events of the times (newspaper headlines and articles, Firsthand Look, Today's Perspective and photo ops) to expand clarity and knowledge. Archival artworks and photography bring alive the times and events of history. Other enrichment opportunities for students include maps of events, influential documents, timelines, living history (online primary resources, books and web sites) and glossary. The easy-to-read narrative of this informational title is complemented with bold, bright captions and colorful highlights that will tempt readers and includes a table of contents and index. Timely coverage of the basic information in this title appears to be adequate for the age group. Discussion of the 2000 presidential election seems overblown. Recommended resource to support social studies curriculum for grades 4 to 6.
