Overview

This is a collection of the first three titles in The Descent Series, which are gritty urban fantasy books about an exorcist, a witch, and their battles against the forces of Heaven and Hell.

Death's Hand:
Elise Kavanagh doesn't want to hunt demons anymore. It's been five years since she killed her last enemy, and life has been quiet since then. She went to college. Got a job, and then lost it. Made a friend or two. Lived a normal life. Now her former partner, a powerful witch named James Faulkner, wants Elise to fight one more time. The daughter of a coven member has been possessed, and Elise is the only exorcist nearby.

Becoming a hero again would mean risking discovery by old enemies. But digging into the case reveals that it might already be too late--bodies are disappearing, demons slither through the night, and the cogs of apocalypse are beginning to turn. Some enemies aren't willing to let the secrets of the past stay dead...

The Darkest Gate:
When Elise Kavanagh retired from demon hunting, she swore it would be permanent. But an attack from a powerful necromancer forced her back into the business, and now she's trying to balance her normal boyfriend and normal job with everything supernatural.

Mr. Black is a demon hunter gone rogue. He's enslaving angels and stealing ethereal artifacts in pursuit of forbidden immortality, and an old grudge drives him to make his final stand in Elise's territory. Destroying her life and killing her friends isn't the goal, but it's a definite perk.

A demonic overlord offers to join against Mr. Black and protect Elise's loved ones. All she needs to do is ally with the demons she's sworn to kill, at the cost of her morals--and maybe her immortal soul. But once she crosses that line, there's no turning back.

Nothing is sacred when Heaven and Hell collide on Earth...

Dark Union:
Every fifty years, the most powerful ethereal and infernal beings convene on Earth to resolve conflicts with mediation by kopides--humans born to police relations between Heaven and Hell. They're meeting in Elise Kavanagh's territory this year, and she used to be the greatest kopis in the world. But she's not invited.

An old friend, Lucas McIntyre, asks her to attend the summit in his place. But when she arrives, she discovers that a human faction called The Union has taken charge of the summit, and they're not playing nice. Worse yet, someone has killed a prominent Union member... and now they're demanding blood.

Oh, man. I've already bought these books! Still, they're a very good, intense read and full of free (at the time I'm writing this review) so try them out! The series stars Elise Kavanagh, a rarity among demon hunters, being female, and James Faulkner, her bonded partner. They hunt demons and creepy things of all sorts, but, wait! So not your normal series and so not preachy or uncomfortably religious even with angels and demons. These books are dark, fast paced, and the stakes climb and climb and climb until you swear there is absolutely no way to get out of the pickle they’ve fallen into. Did I mention intense? Very intense. I couldn’t put them down. Light romance, so probably not for those who need some angst and crushing in their paranormal fiction. Or dark fantasy? A little hazy on the genre. Perfect fit for me though, just enough romance to be believable, and it’s not the focus of the story.

I"m a great fan of Jim Butcher's Dresden Files and this series is certainly in the mode - seems almost patterned after them. It ALMOST pulls it off. The writing is pretty good. The plot is not bad. However, the writer seems stuck in a formula of jumping from a previous foreshadowing event to the current event. In Butcher's books, or in the Richard Kadry Sandman Slim books, the back story comes out over the course of the story and enriches it. In the first of these books (the only one a finished) the jumping around was just distracting. The author does not seem to have mastered using the backstory to enhance instead of distract. I finished the first book - constantly asking myself if I really wanted to spend more time reading it. I barely started the second in the series and immediately saw the same formula being used. I set it aside and I'm not sure I'll go back to finish the lsat 2 in the series. Too bad. The author ALMOST got it right.

Good series, didn't want to put it down. About a woman too hard to be soft, too tired to fight the worlds' problems but she will. A smattering of romance enough to satisfy you but not overwhelm such a well written book. I really enjoyed the first 3 books in this series and can't wait to see what the author has in store.

I liked this series. Be careful of the order, not all books say which number they are and are a bit hard to figure out. Buy this one or get this if still free. It has all 3 of the first stories in it. Which is a full length novel (if you get 1, 2 & 3 seperately they are not very long each). I was intrigued and vested into the relationship of the the kopis and aspis. I wanted to see more this relationship and feel like I missed a huge chunk of the story (like I started with book 5 not 1). Book 1 had them together for a very short time but moving apart. The kopis/aspis relationship is described very well, feared by others and explained on why it is such a force to be reckoned with. But dissapoints you with how little they are together and how fast they drift apart. I read all the way through book 3 and the relationship between them got farther apart not closer. I decided to figure out which book was #4, #5, etc (see my first note) and from the descriptions this does not get better. So you never really see them working together. There is another series Ascension which I just figured out. I was hoping this was the one that started the story arc and their relationship but nope, from the book descriptions it is past the Descent Series arc and unravels their relationship even more. With that said, the story is good, flows well and builds well and ends cleanly. Just disappointed with being tantalized with the kopis/aspis pairing but never to experience it. She would have better served her readers by not putting so much emphasis in the duo, it is like putting a glass of water in front of a thirsty person without letting them have it.

The three storys have 534 pages. There is a lot of action, fighting, killing, but not a strong story line. They do have a story, but i would like more of a story. Not sure if i would read the rest?

It was a bit confusing the way it jumps back and forth in time. I can usually read 800-1200 nook pages in a day or two; but these are under 600 in total and im still reading a week later. The characters just dont grab you.

Asides the fact that this is propably one of the best series that I have ever read, the Descent series is definately something I'd recomend for anyone into the paranormal/action genre. There may even be something here for the romance fan. Over all it's just a good read. Kudos to SM Reine for creating such an exciting series. 5/5 :)

From the first book, I was hooked. The series is unbelievable. I love the paranormal genre. This mixes religion and paranormal and still allows you to think and enjoy at the same time.

The premise of this book series was at once new and very familiar. The idea of a "sword" and "shield" pair to keep us safe from demons was a bit different. The dynamic between the two main characters changed rather dramatically through out the 3 books and I look forward to seeing what comes next.

LOVED IT!!!!!

The author is awesome. Her writing is what Simon Green and Jim Butcher would wtite if they had a kickass female main character. I am thrilled with having found a new author and will finish the series and check out her new series.
