The Diaries of Sophia Tolstoy

The Diaries of Sophia Tolstoy

by Andreevna S. Tolstaia

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal - Library Journal
English readers have cause to celebrate this first complete English translation of Sophia Tolstoy's extensive diaries, which cover the years from 1862 to 1910. When she married Count Leo Tolstoy, the author of War and Peace , husband and wife regularly exchanged diaries. Her life was not an easy one: she idealized her husband, but was tormented by him; even her many children were not an unmitigated blessing. The diaries' notes, which are cross-referenced to Leo Tolstoy's letters and diaries, are awesome and deserve study in their own right. The book is highly recommended and should appeal to a wide audience. Joyce S. Toomre, Russian Research Ctr., Harvard Univ.
