Figuring out how to slim down has become a source of endless conjecture. Book upon book shouts one answer or another from the store shelves: elaborate low-fat or high-protein diets, body-sculpting plans almost calling for a master's in physiology, regimens of drugs and nutritional supplements so complex they'll turn your kitchen counter into a veritable pharmacy. Diet gurus preach their doctrine as if it is absolute, detailing every emotion you'll feel, every gram of sustenance you'll consume, every side effect you'll encounter in the pilgrimage to a happier, thinner you. To be sure, some of these rigorous programs help some people she pounds. But all to often they leave the overweight person feeling overwhelmed and dispirited, like someone slogging blindfolded through molasses.
