    I tried to like this book. I really did. But, I soon realized I needed something more straight forward. So I ordered The Hungry Chick Dieting Solution, which I saw here on BN and I have already learned so much from it. After years of trying every diet that I could get my hands on, I am already losing weight. I actually lost eight pounds. Woo hoo!

    Diet books are popular this time of year, with many people resolving to lose weight and get healthy as the new year begins. The problem with many of them is that they are so complicated, requiring a degree in science to be able to understand and follow the program.
    Reader's Digest editor-in-chief Liz Vaccariello and her team reviewed the science of weight loss and created a 21-day eating plan called The Digest Diet to help people lose weight. Now she has a follow-up book, The Digest Diet Cookbook, with 150 recipes using her plan to aid in that goal.
    The good news is that the recipes are filled with fresh ingredients that anyone can find in your grocery store- nothing crazy or exotic. There is also a wonderful variety of foods; you can make Thai, Greek, Vietnamese, Italian and American food. You won't get bored making the same thing over and over again.
    Even the Fat-Release Shakes, which you can drink twice a day, start with familiar items like nonfat yogurt, coconut milk and honey and allow you to add variations such as bananas, berries, grapes, peanut butter, and cinnamon to create a new shake each day (and it's not that awful green color).
    There are lots of recipes I want to try, such as:
    Smoked Turkey & Swiss Breakfast SandwichesMom's Chicken Noodle SoupMexican Cobb SaladStrawberry Cheesecake MousseI did make one recipe already- North Carolina Barbecued Tenderloin, a pork recipe with cider vinegar, honey, tomato paste and Frank's Red Hot Sauce that my husband really enjoyed. Each serving had 168 calories, 24 grams of protein and 2.5 grams of fat.
    Each recipe includes a graphic with the fat releasers contained in the dish (vinegar, honey, hot sauce) and there is a two page spread of all the fat release staples that will help you stock your pantry. I also liked that they give a list of their favorite wraps and crackers. They also have some success stories from readers who have used the plan.

    If you are looking for a healthy, easy-to-follow way to lose weight or if you just want some new, healthy, fresh recipes, The Diet Digest Cookbook is a great way to go.

    Too complicated

    bought this after seeing it in Reader's Digest. Did not live up to expectations, the meals were to complicated and food was to demanding for a person who has a busy schedule and no cook/trainer. Wish I had my money back for a more livable diet.

    Easy to follow and it works!

    This book is a good teaching manual on nutrition. The shopping lists are helpful and best of all, the diet works.

    Today is the start of day 5. Days 1-4 were tough but we (my husband and I) were resolute to get through it. My husband lost 6 lbs during this phase (223 lb to start and 217 this morning) and I lost four lbs (124 to start, 120 this morning). Glad to be through the shakes, which we didn't love. I am a cook (but for the occassional carry out - chinese, indian, thai) and we eat in unless it is a special occassion. The hardest part for me is that I missed cooking during this first four day phase. I made two batches of soup on Sunday for the week; I didn't have anything to look forward to after work since everything was prepared ahead (maybe I'm unusual that I absolutely love to cook). I am highly looking forward to actually cooking dinner again tonight. I will update on day 14 on progress and ease/difficulty in cooking in addition to weight loss totals.

    Run the other way.  My daughter and I got through 3 of the first 4 days of this diet.  Our motivation was high and we were determined to do whatever possible to make this work.  First of all, we live in an area where we are lucky to have 2 different grocery chains under a mile from our home, and a Trader Joe's only a little further down the road from them.  We were prepared to spend some money on the ingredients and we did just that....a lot of it.  The breakfast shakes were really delicious.  Unfortunately, you can't make them work with any other diet because they are VERY high in calories, etc., given how little you are expected to consume the rest of the day.  The ingredients required to make at least 2 of the soups in the first 4 days of the diet are impossible to find!!  We tried one of the soups that called for a 16 oz can of no-salt pinto beans.  This product does not exist in any of the grocery and specialty stores we tried.  We opted to boil and drain a bag of dry pinto beans and make our own no-salt beans...disgusting!! It also called for whole ancho chile peppers, also next to impossible to find.   Another soup required kale that remained so crisp in the cooking process that it was like eating raw tough weeds from the yard.  Impossible to gag it back.  Despite all this, at the end of the third day, daughter and I were in despair, but decided to try and get through the fourth day, and look ahead to see what yummy things were in store.  Sadly, the rest of the diet was full of even more expensive, hard to find ingredients (ever hear of "expeller-pressed nut oil"??), not to mention things found nowhere but a chef's kitchen like a Dutch oven and an oven-proof skillet.  The only redeeming thing about this book was the mail-in card to receive a free year's subscription to Reader's Digest magazine!  The story has a happy ending...I am proud to say daughter and I are losing weight successfully working the Weight Watchers plan, enjoying our free issues of Reader's Digest magazine, and using this book as a door stop!

    Not for picky eaters.

    This sounds like a great diet but not for people like me who don't eat fish, different cheeses, yogurt and those healthy green veggies.
