Overview

According to Bryman (social research, U. of Loughborough, UK), more and more aspects of our society are exhibiting features associated with Disney theme parks. This process of "Disneyization" is characterized by four dimensions—theming, hybrid consumption, merchandising, and performative labor—each of which is described and analyzed in separate chapters. He then argues that the successful operation of Disneyization requires control and surveillance and explores the way in which these operate in Disneyized institutions and practices. Finally, he examines the extent to which Disneyization should be seen as a harmful "systemscape" with homogenizing trends diffusing through the economy, culture, and society.
