In 'The Doomsters' Ross MacDonald has created a masterpiece of mystery and suspense that left me on the edge of my seat the entire book! This was the third Archer mystery that I had the pleasure to read and the first that I can safely say was perfect. MacDonald brings a level of depth to the plot and character that elevates the material to classic status and sheds more light into the character and mind of Lew Archer than was seen in the two previous books in the series I read('The Barbarous Coast' and 'The Ivory Grin'). What was the most shocking in reading the novel was the levels of gray introduced in the characters actions. This is not a case of simple good versus evil or black versus white. Every character has a sympathetic side and a nasty side as well, even Archer is forced to examine his own behavior and see how his own mistakes indirectly played a part in the great family tragedy that will play out over the course of the novel. The quality of the novel energized me to such a great level that I'm eagerly looking forward to reading the rest of the series! Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback.
